I have a Kawai UST-8. It was built in 1995 and has a nice, precise action. I bought it secondhand and I'm noticing that the hammers feel very hard to my touch when they strike the strings. To the eye the hammers seem to have had very light wear. The piano doesn't make a harsh sound but it's making my finger joints ache. Does anyone have any advice? With thanks.

It's 25 years old, and due for a comprehensive service over and above tuning. Regulation and voicing, and any repairs should be included.

Bob, (an excellent piano tech) is correct in that the piano could benefit from a good servicing.

The Kawai UST-8 is a fine studio model piano, with a very good action. You would likely be able to tell a big difference in the heaviness of the action after a good servicing by an experienced tech. There are several friction points in the action that can cause sluggishness; these friction points can be addressed/smoothed out by regulation and lubrication with special lubricants especially made for piano actions. It can make a difference.

Good luck!

One other thought, compare the feel of the touch with the damper pedal (the right pedal) pressed and held down. If it feels better that way, then this is something to relay to the piano tuner.

Many times the dampers are not adjusted well, and this can really make the touch feel extra heavy.
