I've been away from the forums since 4-29-19. I had surgery for prostate cancer, and I'm finally back in the office for the first time today. I'm also going to retire, Friday is my last day.

Glad you're back and on the road to recovery, John! And, the retirement sounds nice too! Congratulations!

I retired last October 1st, when my wife's illness got worse. She passed away on December 15th last year and I miss her more than I can say.

I've been doing a lot of chores and renovations around my house that got put on hold for a long time, but I'm beginning to enjoy being retired, a lot! Some said I'd get bored real quick, but it ain't happened yet. smile

Wishing you a speedy recovery and a wonderful retirement, my friend!

Hello John,

All the best for your recovery and your retirement. Now you’ll have more time to play the piano.

For the boys who are reading this thread, there is a new startup called Ezra that performs MRI scans of the prostate in order to detect cancer. Ezra buys MRI time and has gotten the cost of a prostate scan down to $500. No, they’re not covered by insurance. I had it done last week and there was no evidence of cancer. It was the best $500 I ever spent.

I’m not sure, geographically speaking, where they offer this service. I had it done in New York.

I'm glad you're back, John. I hope you're healing and able to play piano. Didn't you also have stenosis surgery a few months ago? You've really been through the ringer.
Here's wishing you all the best.

Thanks, Rick --

I'm so lucky to have my wife in good health -- and a steady supply of chores and renovations to do. I'm not the least bit worried about getting bored.

I thought I'd be able to do a lot of piano playing during recovery, but it's only the last few days that it's been possible. One surprise about prostate surgery is that it hurts to sit down afterwards, especially on a rather hard piano bench. I thought it might be because I'm sitting on where the prostate used to be, but the doctor says it's from the catheter, which pokes your bladder when you sit. It takes a few days after the catheter comes out....

My cancer was detected by my primary doctor, who noticed that my PSA, while not high, was higher than the previous year. He sent me to the urologist, who ordered another PSA, and then the MRI. From the MRI they decided to do a biopsy, which came back Gleason 4+3.

While a clean MRI from Ezra is certainly a good thing, I'd suggest watching the PSA along with the rest of the blood work at your annual physicals. The MRI only means you're OK today. In 3-5 years, that could change.

Indeed -- laminectomies at L23 and L45 last August. The results are wonderful -- no more chronic back pain.

The funny thing is -- and maybe I'm totally nuts here -- I think I'm in excellent health. I feel fine....

Thanks, everybody. I appreciate all the comments, though it would be cumbersome to reply to every one....

Hello John,

Thanks for that information. Yes, I’ll have to decide if I should throw down $500 a year. I probably will. I want to stay on top of it.

I was shocked to learn recently that Joe Henry, a talented singer songwriter, was diagnosed with Stage 4 prostate cancer.

My urologist told me that he sees forty men a day, and thirty five of them are nervous. All men are at risk.

Be well.

Talk that over with your primary care doctor. That's who can tell you whether Ezra is the best use for the money. I'm lucky to have a great primary, he has both an MD and PhD.
