One of my indulgences is watching the Tonight Show. I keep up on popular culture and have a few laughs in the process. I dislike almost 100% of the bands they have on (mostly pop and rap) while occasionally I'm surprised by an interesting band. I was really surprised the other night when they had Lang Lang on promoting his new album. He did a medley and I really enjoyed it. You got to love his enthusiasm. Here it is if you're interested.

He can entertain a mainstream audience, if nothing else. I've listened to his entire Piano Book album and thought it was fairly "normal" playing except for the very last track, Maple Leaf Rag (also played in the clip above), which to my ears just sounded bizarre and overindulgent.

That was entertaining!
Fallon sure got fired up.

Steinway even delivered a Lang Lang Black Diamond Sterling Edition for him to play. wink

YouTube Commenters were pissed about the clapping during play.

He seems to be having fun. It doesn't surprise me about the YouTube commentators. It's their way of letting everyone know they were at a classical concert once.

Why is the presenter calling him Long Long?

"Long Long" is actually closer to the authentic Chinese pronunciation.

Yeah, he did.

It doesn't show it in the youtube clip, but afterward he walked over to the piano players in his band (The Roots) as they were performing the postlude music and he playfully chided them as if to say, "can't you guys do that?" They just laughed and helplessly threw up their hands. grin

Lang Lang was also in the UK, appearing on BBC TV's popular early evening "The One Show" a few weeks ago to talk about classical music and promote his CD. The One Show's musical guests are normally all from the pop/rock world, but Lang Lang is the one classical pianist who can comfortably inhabit that world, and hold everyone's interest and not appear like a fish out of water - yet without 'going over to the other side'.

He made another appearance on that show a couple of weeks later - not in the TV studio but at her school - to give a lesson to a teenaged girl who was worried about her ABRSM Grade 7 exam (playing a Chopin nocturne). The audience could see the transformation in her playing in just a few minutes from a somewhat studied, stiff rendition to a flowing expressive one just by following Lang Lang's suggestions. (She passed, of course.........).

The classical piano world needs more proselytizers like Lang Lang - concert pianists who can communicate just as easily with kids (and inspire them) as with the hoi polloi of the adult world, who can show everyone that classical music can be enjoyed just like any other music, and is not a preserve of the high-brow, highly-educated, highly-washed, white upper-class.........

And he managed all this without going down the André Rieu/Liberace/Richard Clayderman route. That's an extraordinary achievement.

He really has been a great "proselytizers" for classical piano. Good for him!

Not just a proselytizer but a ‘doer’. I am so impressed he opened his own music school, with vetted, qualified teachers.

I'd say he's pretty darn close to the Liberace model. A crowd pleaser, yes; a great classical pianist, no.

I think the thing about Lang Lang is simply his contorted saccharine facial expressions and gestures, which in the context of his playing can be visually annoying, but really have no relevance to my mind. It's the sound that's important.

He can be a bit hit and miss in interpretation, but quality-wise I feel he's always up there.

For my taste he tends to overcook stuff a bit, but then each to their own. A matter of taste.

I wish him all the best, and his massive contribution to Chinese culture is surely worth a lot.

Lang Lang has greatly contributed to popularizing classical music in China and around the world. Even though I am no fan of his playing I think this contribution outweighs any of what I see as his negatives.

I think many of his interpretative choices and certainly his platform manner are quite often almost silly for someone playing works by the greatest composers, and IMO are designed to appeal general public. He has been wildly successful in that respect. I don't think he would get past the first round of any major competition if he played the way he does in his concerts even if he deleted all of his mannerisms. I see him as a throwback to some of the pianists of the mid 19th century like Leopold de Meyer, Herz, Thalberg, and Gottschalk who played mostly their own flashy compositions.

I'm definitely part of the "mainstream audience" and "general public" because I really like Lang Lang. I love his mannerisms, arrangements, and playing style.

I appreciate watching the Chopin competitions on youtube, but after about 20 minutes it gets kind of boring. Lang Lang doesn't bore me. His arrangements are unusual and different in a good way. He keeps me engaged with the music and I seem to respond to his energy.
