Yamaha C6...

Anyone know the wire gauge for note D7?

I don't have access to the piano, retail customer wants to order the wire from us.

Thanks.

Peter's point is that metric wire numbers are different than US wire numbers. They are a half size off. I always forget which way so I measure to make sure.

On the other hand, Steinway does not change the gauge numbers depending on whether they are made in the US or in Germany. That may have been the case for Yamaha when they made pianos in the US.

Peter,

You've lost me.

Are you saying that if I need to replace a wire marked as 15 gauge on a Yamaha piano, I can't just use American wire marked 15 gauge?

Thanks,
Joe

Edit:
I know that it's always a good idea to measure anyhow. But, is there a difference between American and Japanese gauges.

Should I get the measurement in English Metric with my micrometer and then calculate the American gauge?

Joe,

That is correct. 15 gauge marked on the bridge will actually be closer to 14.5 AWG. That mistake has been made many times. I recently restrung a C3 that had been restrung about 30 years ago. On destringing I quickly determined the previous stringer failed to realize this fact. It was strung an entire half size too large all the way. Sounded and tuned pretty poorly.

The conversion is roughly one half size.

David Durben at Yamaha confirmed this for me by email not long ago.

Thank you, Peter.

More than 40 years ago, when I was still in piano tech school, we were advised to always measure before restringing, regardless of what was stamped on the plate. Edit:. Of course, back then it was for different reasons. Manufacturers might alter/improve the scale but have plates that were already finished and stamped on the production line.

Thank you for your reply and for sharing your knowledge. smile

I have measured wires, and the diameters do not always correspond to what they are supposed to be. (Please, no nonsense about how I did not see that the piano was restrung!)

The measurement that counts is density of the wire, and without exceptionally sensitive equipment, it cannot be determined.

Since Pro-TAC answered the question, I guess it's ok to discuss this a little more...

Another thing to be careful of is WWII US manufactured pianos. To support the war effort, manufacture of 1/2 sizes was suspended for a while. So, it's very possible that a piano made during those years could be marked with one size wire and have a different size. This is very important to know if replacing a broken string.

If D7 on the Yamaha is broken, the best bet would be to ask the owner to clip a sample and send it in. That way, you can verify the correct gauge by measuring with a micrometer. It should be cheap for the owner to put it in an envelope in a cardboard envelope and mail it.
