I thought this might be of interest here. Apparently the owner of The Indianapolis Colts is a big Beatles fan. He just bought the Broadwood upright used on the Sgt. Peppers album for over $700,000.00. Here is the story from The Music Trades:

Hmm .... Seems a bit misleading. I believe that was John Lennon's personal piano, and he surely used it when writing songs, but I'm pretty sure it was not in the Abbey Road studio where the album was recorded as suggested by the press release ("played by John Lennon on ...").

Larry.

Interesting that you would bring this up on PW today, Rich! This event and post on his Twitter feed (for which he is notorious) caused a bit of media uproar reported here in Indianapolis. Why? Since he happened to be wearing an Arizona Coyotes sweatshirt, people assumed he is making an attempt to purchase the NHL team. The Colts and Irsay have had to issue press releases explaining how he came to own the sweatshirt and why he was wearing it. ha wow It always amazes me how the general public can begin jumping at various conclusions over a simple picture.

Jim is quite the music collector - owning a lot of memorabilia.

Jim Ursay with Sgt. Pepper Piano in an Arizona Coyotes Sweatshirt

Irsay will not buy the AZ Coyotes story

Wow! That’s quite a price for a used upright! Maybe for The Bohemian Rhapsody Bechstein. Or Sir Elton Johns red Yamaha. Nah I just can’t see that much sentimentality for the Sgt Peppers Piano.

As a brand in 1872 the Broadwood piano was very well respected. By the 1960s or 1970s this was already an old piano. If this had not belonged to John Lennon, I don't think it would have any real value.

Anything connected with the Beatles sells for a fortune. I think George Michael bought John Lennon's Steinway upright model Z for over £1,000,000 about 10 or 15 years ago. It does seem excessive but that's the nature of these things.

Original manuscripts from Mozart don't sell for as much as this....

Some wealthy people do help other people.

I worked for a wealthy man who paid the college tuition of every single kid in his extended family, every niece and nephew. When I said that was nice of him, he shrugged his shoulders and said, I can. It didn’t matter what school, either, if a kid got accepted, he’d pay the tuition.

To be fair to George Michael, and this is also true of Elton John, and Freddie Mercury, Robbie Williams and many, many other artists, actors, musicians who have made a successful career for themselves:

They give shedloads to charity, to help friends, to help those in need, but they just have so much more money coming in than going out that they have enough to buy big houses, and over-pay for clapped out Steinway and Broadwood uprights.

Now, if the corporations paid their fair share of taxes, and governments put in place everything needed for education, health, social welfare, and there was some kind of social mobility permitted in this society.... think how much better the world would be....

Yes, Robert Smith the "quiet billionaire".

Those who do use their wealth to help others admit that it is far more satisfying to their mental and emotional well being.

This Irish man, Chuck Feeney, gave away $8 billion dollars

https://www.irishtimes.com/news/ire...llionaire-who-gave-it-all-away-1.3413084

because he said it was the right thing to do.

It’s a full time job to give away that amount of money.

It’s easy to belittle the rich but they’re human and have human needs, just like everyone else. Yes, food and shelter are taken care of but the other needs are not as easily taken care of with money.

See the film; Danny Collins.

“We’re all here to help each other get through this thing, whatever it is.” - Mark Vonnegut, doctor, son of Kurt Vonnegut, the writer, when asked by Kurt what it all meant, what life was all about.

Who are we to judge how someone spends their money? I only judge how someone might use my money. Charitable contributions and taxes. Much of my tax money is specifically designated to provide for those who cannot provide for themselves, but who knows where it really goes. I check out the charities to which I give to make sure all the money is directed to those in need. How anyone spends their legally earned money after taxes “ain’t nobody’s business but my own”.
