I need to play a few large chords with my right hand down in the bass so my right hand is effectively above my left leg.I am feeling a fair bit of tension in my wrist. Is it simply a matter of pulling my elbow across in to my body as best I can to realign the hand ?

If you can shift towards the left, that should make things easier. Try leaning using your pelvis, but with your upper body still level (if it's comfortable).

Leaning to the left as far as you can will help. However, if that's not enough, it may be possible to actually move down the bench. You could also look into redistributing the chords so the LH takes some of the notes (I don't know what music you're talking about to know if this is even possible).
