Today I was in the inner city and ran across this street pianist who travels the world with an actual August Förster concert grand (it says so in big letters on the piano itself and also in his brochure and in his blog):

[Linked Image]

Well, that may be interesting but is totally OT for this sub-forum, you might say? Weeeelll...

I'm a curious person. smile

First data point: Damn! That concert grand is loud! I knew that CGs are loud, but this loud? But strangely, at the same time it gives of a vibe of sounding amplified somehow.

So I got curious and moved around a bit...

Second data point: The piano is open, but you cannot see the harp. It is covered with cloth. Well, that might be a good precaution in an environment where leaves and other stuff is flying around (not to mention pigeons!).

Third data point: Some strange bits of cloth covering the cheek blocks. And another strange bit of felt, about 5cm high over the whole width of the fall board, just above the keys.

Doubts intensify... smile

Fourth data point: Well, that would be the first concert grand with a plastic action. laugh

The final confirmation comes, when the pianist reaches through that mentioned felt on the fall board. It turns out the lower half of the fall board has been cut away and the gap is now covered by that felt like a curtain. Through which the pianist can reach to get to the controls of the - yes, you guessed it - digital piano he is actually playing. In the shell of a concert grand (I'll just take it at face value that it's the shell of an August Förster).

So yay, it's a digital - on topic for this forum!

I wasn't able to see exactly which DP he was using, but it was one of those with this silvery-but-slightly-golden/bronze-ish plastic that is supposed to look like metal but just looks cheap. Maybe a Yamaha YPG-535? (Which calls the color "Champagne Gold"...)

It was well done, actually. It was even modded in a way so that the pianist used the normal mechanical sustain pedal. The trap work for it must have been modified to push against the digital sustain pedal inside of the grand body. Which of course must also contain an amp, speakers and a power source (there was no cable running to the piano).

I don't begrudge him his little subterfuge, so I'm not outing him by name. The passersby certainly seemed to enjoy it. But I thought it would be fun to share here: A digital (and an oldish one to boot) "successfully" passing itself off as an August Förster concert grand. smile
(Well, until a curious PianoWorld geek happens to come along... blush)

That's some great detective work, JoBert! I'm sure a 9ft frame has plenty of space for some large batteries (even something like an EV skateboard) smile

Btw, just looking at your pictures gives me such the wish to visit DE/EU again. Maybe when the kids are a bit older!

Quite impressed by your powers of deduction there! Congrats! But tell me, why did you suspect a plastic action for your 4th data point?

We have a flat in Amsterdam and my wife is based there so I am in Europe quite regularly. I have to say that compared to Washington DC, it's really night and day. Everything just feels different - not talking about the languages.

There's guy in Denmark who has specialised in that sort of thing; you bring your old, worn out acoustic and pick a digital of your choice, and then he builds the digital into the acoustic. Personally, I love that sort of thing, but his prices are outrageous.

I don't see the point of this at all unless one is trying to pull something over on another person. It just takes up more space unnecessarily. One might as well buy this.

Well, it helps provide this street musician with a career, and as for having it in your home; an acoustic piano is not just a musical instrument, it is also furniture, and of the most visually striking kind. An acoustic, especially a grand, kept in good condition has a certain aura around it, completely transforming the building it is in. A straight digital can't really do that, although the hybrids arguably can (I think the jury is still out on that one).

I looked over his shoulder (from the side, with a suitable distance). When keys are pressed, the sides of the adjacent keys are exposed. It was rather obvious that those were not wood.

Pretty furniture probably.

Friends of ours, with no affiliation to pianos themselves, seem to think so about our Novus in our home. They've said so a couple of times (without prompting or leading questions - I swear! grin).

Thanks for sharing JoBert!

It would be interesting to know a little bit more about the digital being used inside the grand piano cabinet, and how the sound is amplified.

Kind regards,
James

I just saw this post on Reddit. It looks like "fake pianos" really is "a thing!"

I'm glad for him that his piano wasn't destroyed, and that he's on the move again.

Same. Although it could be argued since that since the piano itself is the digital keyboard inside, and everything else is just an elaborate looking decorative 'shell,' he could likely have repaired almost anything back to a serviceable state as long as the digital keyboard wasn't damaged.

It seems this happened two months ago.
