I had the opportunity to sit on the stage last night at Carnegie and hear Evgeny play a solo recital. If he comes to a planet near you, GO!! He was magnificent! Played a great program, 2/3 of which was unfamiliar music to me, Chopin, Schumann, Debussy and Scriabin. His demeanor onstage is thoroughly dignified, slightly aging, pleasant, intense; his head upturned alternating in appropriate pleasure and agony based on the music, a little chewing motion with his jaw. At least 10,000 times I was convinced that his head was going to POP OFF from his neck and the contents of his body would explode over the audience from the intensity and difficulty what he was doing haha. The experience of hearing him was hearing 10,000 different textures, an incredible variety of different piano sounds all perfectly controlled, and 5,000 different moods, perfectly expressed. He is a heroic figure at the piano, thoroughly masculine but able to express the whole range of emotions.

The great tradition of the piano virtuoso is alive and well!

Nice. I’ve seen him a few times there, but never while sitting on stage!

I heard that same program from him in Vienna in March. You can read my impressions here. He's incredible!!

Later this year and on and off until mid-2020, he'll play a recital program of Beethoven sonatas that I absolutely have to hear. Unfortunately all the dates in cities I usually visit and have friends in, are really inconvenient for me! I'll have to figure something out, though, he'll play the Tempest among others, which is my favourite sonata of all time. I can't miss this, I'll swim if I have to (I live in Ireland), lol.
