Has anyone tried the Yamaha smart pianist app (especially with the N1X). Is it actually useful?

Seems a lot of effort to buy a wireless adaptor, find an appropriate tablet to install it on and set it up. I don't want to go through the effort / expense and find it doesn't do anything I need.

For those who have what OS/devices have you used? The Yamaha site is very specific about the relatively small number of devices it will work on

Yesterday, the dealer "threw in" the adapter when I bought my N1X (meaning he charged me enough already for it. LOL)

I did try it in the store and found it essential to controlling the piano. In particular, certain changes were required button and key combos that came straight out of the 90's. It's how I control my $800 FP30 now, and I'd feel bad it was the same way on a new piano 10x the price. With the Smart Pianist app, changing settings was so much easier, that I was previously thinking about decommissioning my current (old) tablet completely when I buy an iPad Pro in a few days, but now I am planning it as a dedicated piano controller. (It'll be my personal answer to the NV10's flat panel display!)

I periodically use it to manage settings on my NU1X using an iPhone X. Itโ€™s useful if I want to actually play with any of the settings that arenโ€™t just as easily controlled from the controls on the instrument. For example, playing with resonance parameters. However, those are pretty much set-and-forget settings for me, so I donโ€™t use the app that often. The app can also be helpful if you want to search and play through any of the demo songs, but I almost never do that personally.

Also to note, I found the Wifi adapter (UD-WL01) to be a more reliable option than the Bluetooth one (UD-BT01). It seems less flaky at reconnecting.

You can use a USB cable too if you don't want to spring for the annoying wifi dongle that sticks out the front of your instrument and gets knocked by your knee. That's what I do, and just unplug the cable when I'm done. I might have been vocal about the terrible design and user experience of the wifi dongle already smile It is a bit of a drag as I have to unplug the computer cable to use the iPhone cable, but it's not so bad.

I find I use it primarily to make recordings, you can upload them directly to Dropbox which is convenient, and for the metronome. (I really like the bell sound that it uses to start each measure, I can't find a iPhone app that has anything similar to it.) As for the other settings I occasionally play with them but for the most part I just turn the NU1X on and go with the defaults. I also got my adapter "thrown in" with the purchase. If that hadn't happened I probably would have tried the cable approach and not paid the absurd $150 for the adapter. I've said this before but I find it absurd that with a DP that costs as much as the Avant Grands do and that the X series are newer models you have to purchase separate WiFI and Bluetooth adapters for a combined price of about $250. They should just be built into the piano.

I hadn't thought about USB - but that is an easy way to try it out

Unfortunately it seems the app is not compatible with my tablet, just my phone and I am not sure I have a USB thingy for that frown
