Well, I actually always recognized the more expensive piano. And it almost always was very apparent in the sustain.

A few comments though:
Korg Grandstage vs P45 - both cr*p
FP10 vs ES110 - the FP10 is so much better to my ears
Korg Crome vs PX-S3000 - a cr*p vs a total cr*p

A summary to myself: Korg can't produce good piano sound to my ears. Casio is even worse that that. I actually liked the Roland LX-706 in that video. The Kawai CA78 while apparently a good piano sound isn't my cup of tea.

While I couldn't tell what each piano was I got the cheaper and more expensive correct on all of these. One of the issues I have with this test is that they aren't playing the same thing.
So if your playing something with long sustained notes vs shorter notes, you really can't judge if there is any looping on the second one. And if your playing one in a higher octave and the other in a lower octave. You can't judge very easily the notes up and down the keyboard. Now the basic premise I agree with. The basic samples on most major brands are pretty good sound wise. But how well the the velocity is translated does mean a lot. If the velocity curve doesn't fit your playing, its going to be frustrating. That finger to ear connection, the play-ability of the action, and other factors make-up the bulk of the differences here. And those differences can mean the difference between being inspiring to play and just serviceable. Everyone needs to judge what is important to them and how much they are willing to spend. Nobody can do that for you.

About the action I does prefer the AvantGrand over NWX and GrandTouch (which I find similar), and does prefer NWX and GrandTouch over GH3X. The difference is very clear.

While the methodology is a bit suspect, and a $5,000 DP may not be 10 times better than a $500 DP, you can almost always tell the difference between the cheaper piano and the more expensive one; more so if you were able to physically play it.

I totally missed Round 2 (Yamaha E463 vs Kawai CA78). But that might be because I have been playing my Yamaha I455 keyboard for years and might have developed an unconscious preference for its sound.

In Round 5, I immediately favored the FP10 over the ES110, and because the difference in prices is not that much, I consider that a "win."

So a score of 6/7 isn't too bad.

That was interesting. As with VSTs, the house style is the dominant factor; the similarities fell along manufacturer lines as much as anything. Clearly Korg have abandoned any attempt to replicate an acoustic piano sound and are now going for a decidedly synth piano sound. Kawai has perhaps the hardest edge, Yamaha was a bit disappointing and Casio didn't sound great. Roland was the most interesting and varied to me, but I wasn't really convinced by the LX-706 myself. Comedy award goes to the PSR-E463.

Most striking feature of all is just how bad all of them sound compared to high end VSTs. They really need to raise their game.

I’ve read some posts about there being ‘something wrong’ with the GrandTouch. Some people talk about a clicking whilst others talk about a heaviness. Did you notice any of this, or are these people crazy?

I have loved GrandTouch the times I’ve tried it in the store.

If someone wants to posit that pianos priced at $2000 and at $4000 are not so very different, an argument can be made.

But to compare a $300 piano with a $4000 is ludicrous. The former is a toy not fit to sniff the sweat off my *!#&@$.

I didn’t feel the test was scientifically correct or even was staged to make a point. This video looked like compilation or bunch of clips using various sources. Some video clips, some line in recordings, some microphone recordings. Adding different pieces played everywhere there was no easy way to judge.

The only limited point it conveyed is beginners should not worry too much about sounds of various pianos and focus more on learning the art of playing.

There was no way to feel touch of actions so thats a moot point.
