This has been a very educational thread!

I am happy to provide some objective information. I am involved in organizing a concert season now, as well as other things, so I have not always been to get out and measure keyboards.

Chinese Hamilton studio 48-3/8"
Kimball Viennese grand 1989 48-3/8"

There are two things to be gleaned from this topic:

Key size has not been standardized, and the original assumption about Steinway keys is probably wrong. They have been getting narrower, not wider.

Several years ago I replaced a set of keys for a Steinway "M" from the 30's I think. The original keys were 48" and the new set was 48 1/4" or so I can't remember exactly, but I do remember having to cut the treble cheek block to make room for them. That's not a fun job.

I currently have a model "O" in the shop from 1919 that measures 48 5/16". So it would seem the only conclusion to be made is that key size has not been standardized.

Ah, but that's where the magic of engineering tolerances comes in --- Given the numbers cited in this thread, the standard would appear to be 48.25" +/- 0.25". Presto! We have a standard..... ;-)
