I'm just curious, how did he avoid service in the war? He was 23 at the time of Pearl Harbor.

None of his online bios mention anything about the war, it's clear he didn't serve, but at his age there must have been a reason for him not to. I figure someone here has read a more thorough biography of him and might know.

Interesting... Memoir author/daughter Jamie Bernstein only mentioned in her book, Famous Father Girl that he opposed the Vietnam War. So when Lenny passed away in 1990, he was 72, which tells me he would have been too old for the Vietnam era draft. He was born in 1918. However, here is what I discovered re WW II: "Bernstein had asthma, which kept him from serving in the military during World War II."

Ah thanks. I figured it was health related. Nothing else made sense. Even his wiki entry mentions he had a somewhat sickly childhood.
