It really comes down to the specific piano in this case.

Almost nobody has had the chance to hear equally prepared examples of both versions in the same space, and even so it's not the best idea to make a blanket pronouncement of a model or brand by only playing one of them.

When I tried the new 185 at NAMM, it didn't seem like a huge difference from the standard 185 to my ears, however there weren't two to compare...and the last time I'd played a new (non VC edition) 185 was a year prior, making any comparison pretty pointless.

In the showroom near me there is only the regular.
In Vienna I play the VC but long time ago and I can't realy comparate.
I'm scare to make a wrong choose! Suppose VC have more sound projection and maybe I don't need in a house whit small room.

With regard to the room, I would not prefer one over the other. The VC was made to be a more appealing to wider audience; hence a more modern, versatile instrument (cross-genre), whilst the standard 185 is directed towards classical music. I have tried both the 185 VC and the regular, but not side by side. The 185 VC has duplex scaling, and a thicker rim. They can both make as pianissimo as any piano. The 185 VC I tried went to a church apparently.

I once intended to try the Bösendorfer 225, as it had been much discussed. I said to the dealer that it seems quite “popular”, popular here being a relative term, and he replied that never has an instrument been loved so much by so few, in other words not for everyone but those who like it tend to love it.

For the price of a 185 (VC) there are literally all sorts of alternatives, so make sure you try as many different brands as possible.

Example: Bechstein, Blüthner, Sauter, August Förster, Grotrian, Shigeru Kawai, Yamaha CF(4), Yamaha Sx.

Best of luck.

I had to move a 185 (not the VC) from a smaller room to larger one, for what it's worth. At that price, I'd expect an in situ demo at my home and offer to pay transport costs if no purchase ensues. Marvelous instruments, for sure.

I think you should go for whichever piano you find more beautiful. I presume they're both the same price? I think the VC is slightly more powerful in the treble but I could be wrong. I did play one last August and found it to be phenomenal but I didn't play the standard 185

Great insight terminaldegree,

To the OP - I feel that for a room in a home, the traditional 185 design could work beautifully. It has been the choice of many pianists for their home.

If you were putting the piano in a large space as a recital piano, I might lean towards the VC, but for an intimate space, the traditional design will give you amazing performance.

Good luck,

Finally I chose the regular bösendorfer 185 becouse the sound is very sweet and I don't need so much sound projection for my small room.
