AudioDeluxe often has interesting piano VSTs on offer. AIR Mini Grand, which was originally a part of Avid Pro Tools (still is) but is now sold seperately, can be had for only $19.

https://www.audiodeluxe.com/products/air-mini-grand

This might fit the bill for those who don't want to spend too much, don't like the modelled sound, like that of Pianoteq, but want something a bit more authentic sounding, yet requiring very little disk space.

AIR Mini Grand is not up there with the likes of Ravenscroft, Ivory II pianos, Garritan CFX, but it might be enough for some people. According to videos, it seems one can get quite a good variety of sounds out of it.

How about free?

Salamander

https://sites.google.com/site/soundfonts4u/

Have no idea why this isn't mentioned more often. It's a terrific piano, all the more surprising considering it's free.

Is any of that stuff VSTs? The website mentions soundfonts.

Scroll down to Pianos. There are versions that work with the free Sforzando player (which you download on Sforzando site). For example:

Sal-Stein-Uprights-Sforzando-V3.4 (999mb) *Plogue Sforzando for PC/Mac compatible version*

I've not tried this one ... but it might meet the needs of someone on a limited budget ...

But the freebies generally range from poor to terrible.

I've tried many of the freebies. None were worth the trouble of installing them.

He's looking for small footprint and cheap. You can't get cheaper than free. As for size, 999mb is for the high quality whole package of like 10+ pianos. There's smaller packages that can even run on phones and tablets although I think they need to be Apples.

The best of the pianos in the package is the Yamaha C5. Also, there's nothing to install other than the free sforzando player. You then just drop the relevant piano file into the player.

Really, you should try it before condemning it. You'll be surprised. It is a rare find.

Boylan I'm not exactly looking for a small footprint cheap piano VST. I just posted this, in case somebody else might be. Well, I'm always looking, in a way, but I don't think the piano VSTs available now, would offer me anything I don't have already (see my list below).

Though I might eventually get a new virtual piano. Not because I need it, just because I like playing with new toys. eek

I already have the Salamander Grand, and have had it for a few years. Can't say I use it much, but it's not bad. Actually, I think it's good enough for practice, but I'd rather use some of the non-free ones I have. After all I paid for them, and many of them are a tad better than the Salamander Grand.

So I agree with you, it's absolutely worth trying out, and the Sforzando player is quite a good platform. At least good enough for some software piano makers to have their VSTis run on it, like Production Voices, and I have most of their Sforzando piano libraries.

TheodorN I have others too, but only one I've paid for. That's PV Concert Grand Compact and I got it really cheap. It's also the one I use the most, just about exclusively.

Before that, of the freebies I tried, Salamander was the best, but you do have to tweak all these pianos to your replay system. It can make a huge difference. What worked for Salamander didn't work for PV Concert Grand, and vice versa.

I'm sticking with Concert Grand for the time being. I'm pretty pleased and I'd sooner put the money I'd spend on another VST in a piggy bank towards a real piano.

Although the Embertone Steinway regularly temps me.

I highly recommend the Salamander Grand. It is a top-notch piano sound!

I liked the Salamander Grand far more than AIR Mini Grand. In my humble opinion, Salamander grand samples are superior to MOTIF XF and of course CP4 which uses the same set of samples. The samples easily put Yamaha, Korg, Roland, Nord etc. to shame.

Let's not underestimate Salamander Grand:

The samples are professionally recorded. Two AKG c414 mics used ($3000 worth of microphones) in 16 layers (every other 2 keys so 88/3 samples for each layer, there are hammer and some other samples which should be subtracted from 16). This is no joke! Off course it is not the best for studio recording but for a live performance, this is very acceptable. If you know how to manipulate the SFZ files and add some nice effects it will beat many cheap VSTs.

What are the technical specs for AIR Mini Grand?

The gentleman who sampled this piano also sampled Salamander Drumkits:

One question, the OP video shows it as if it were a standalone application but I understand it is a plugin and requires a host (DAW?) to work.

This is an area where I am completely noob. Could somebody provide some directions?

FWIW it requires an ilok license frown and I still need to activate it, once I finish a more prioritary task I am working on with my notebook.

Sorry if my post was misleading, though the AudioDeluxe link actually says in the tech specs, that A 64-bit compatible host application, is required.

I just assumed everyone has a DAW, but that is of course not the case. You can download an evaluation version of Reaper, which is actually fully functional, at least for 60 days. Possibly longer, I don't know if that has changed, since I bought Reaper myself, some years ago.

http://reaper.fm/download.php

There are some free DAWs around too, that is, not just free for a limited time, but others are more equipped to inform about them.

You should be able to get Air Mini Grand to work in Reaper, and if you do, you'll have it working long enough to know if it sounds good.

About iLok, it also says in the specs on the AudioDeluxe page, that iLok is optional. Are you sure there's no other way to activate the Air Mini Grand?

About the video, the piano player has cut a screenshot of his Air Mini Grand window, into the corner of his piano playing video, to show his settings, in each section played. It is no indication of him not using, or using, a DAW, which he must have had to do.

The below video from BenoniStudio shows in more detail, how this thing works, and it's clear he's hosting the Air Mini Grand in Pro Tools, from where it originally came.

Hello, TheodorN, thank you for your comments.

I should have read the small print. smile I assumed it would work standalone just like Pianoteq.

After posting, I found a web page that provides some guidance on how to install it.

I had a quick try with Cakewalk and it loaded the library and ilok requested the license number or login (for evaluation). I will try again later when I am not in a hurry. If it does not work with Cakewalk, I will install Cubase (I have a license that came with Yamaha AG06).

About iLok, the license manager does not depend on a dongle (though it seems to be an option). I suppose the license was hardcoded based on my note's MAC address or HD signature but, for $20, I am not worried.

BR.

OK cool. I noticed, that when I clicked Electronic Delivery, on the AudioDeluxe page, they promise full support direct from the manufacturer. Hope you get it working, you'll maybe let us know how or if it works out well. cool

Hi, I managed to have it working with Cakewalk. I have to reactivate it (had to reset Windows 10 recently) but I found the process to have MiniGrand working cumbersome. I tried Cantabile Lite which is free and it was easier to set up. I tested it with Arturia Keystep so the performance was not very stellar. I will hookup the AG06 to my ES8 later to see how it fares.
