Our two grands had a real workout last Saturday. We had 40 people over to hear two pianists play the Rachmaninoff Second Piano Concerto (with the piano reduction of the orchestra). The soloist was Jon Nakamatsu, who won the quadrennial Van Cliburn competition in 1997 (the only American to win in the past 38 years) playing our Bosie 225. Accompanying Jon was Chris Salocks who started accompanying Jon 42 years ago when Jon was 9 years old! and learning his first concerto (the Mendelssohn g minor). Chris went on to help Jon prepare for the myriad of concerti in his repertoire and the winning Cliburn competition (when he played the Rach 3 and the Beethoven 2). Chris played our Yamaha S400E (predecessor to the CF4). I have a couple of nice shots I took with my iphone, but I apparently can't post them on PF. The dynamic range of a top level professional pianist is mind blowing as is the emotional impact of the performance. If someone can help me post the pictures, I think people will enjoy them.

The name Jon Nakamatsu is a blast from the past for me. I went to a recital he gave after winning the Van Cliburn competition, it must have been 1998 or 1999. I recall the performance being excellent and being very impressed. How lucky you are to have a world class artist perform in your home.

If you use icloud, you can get a link to the photos that you can post here. Or you can use some other service like dropbox to share the photos. Here are the instructions to upload pictures to the site, but it's a bit awkward.

Another way to post pictures is by creating a free www.imgur.com account which takes about 1 min to create, and upload the photos there. You can also mark the photos on IMGUR as unlisted so one can't find them by searching on the site, so they can only be shown with the URL link.

Looks like a very nice time.
Your Bösendorfer looks gorgeous.

So did you get around to asking Jon about how he compares the Bosendorfer 225, to the Steinways he has played?

Jon was very diplomatic. He had never publicly played a concerto on a Boesendorfer and is still a major Steinway artist. Unfortunately no juicy quotes.

His recording of the second Schumann sonata is great.

I was afraid of that.
Rumor has it that Jimmy Hoffa made some disparaging remarks about Steinway, shortly before he disappeared.
