Hi all,

Currently learning Joplin's Solace. I bought the sheet music for it and in bar 29 it suggests a fingering of 1-2-4 for the final chord in the bar. I do not know if this was original score suggestion, but it leaves a funny transition to the chord after it. I am wondering whether 1-3-5 is better and would like to know what you would play.

Here is the bar (taken off internet version which doesn't have the fingering suggestion.

[Linked Image]

Ive included the lead in and the first chord of the following bar. The bit I'm interested in is right hand, final chord of that whole bar Ive shown which is A#,F,A#. Piece key signature is C major.

Thanks as always for your help!

Hi

I've played this piece quite a bit over the years.

I play the whole run up to that A# F A# with 1,2,4 and then play A# F A# with 1,3,5.
For me 1,2,4 there is just awkward, and I have reasonably large hands.

My advice would be to play what feels best for you!

Cheers

I don't have access to my piano right now, but I think on the ascent I do:

1-2-4, 1-3-5, 1-3-5, 1-3-5

Hi

Ignore my previous idiotic comment Dan.

I actually play 1-4-5 leading up to the F# A F# and I play 1-3-5 for the F# A F#.

Cheers

I play that piece regularly. I find it easiest to play all four chords with 1-3-5. That said, I've had very little formal training, and there may be good technical reasons for different fingering. On the other hand, this piece isn't at such a fast past that technique is problematic. Comfortable fingering is probably more important.

this is what I would do too - although it doesn't quite lend itself to the phrasing is certainly the most comfortable in terms of position and accuracy. Maybe the phrasing isn't that crucial? I'm uncertain of the tempo.
