Have people heard or played any of them? There are 6 preludes and fugues and I had some great feedback when I played the 6th prelude to people. I’ve also played the 5th prelude. I wanted to try the 4th. Maybe a bit more obscure but I love it.

I used to play no 5 in F minor, and it's on my hit list for relearning. Brilliant typical Mendelssohn fugue subject. The prelude is less exciting but highly contrasting with the fugue, will need to think about how to draw the music out of that like a song without words I think.

No 4 is onw of those peaceful fugues that builds up gradually, no 5 is much more flash-bang.

You might also want to have a look at this.

Mendelssohn: Prelude and fugue in E minor WoO 13

And the seven Charakterstueke, two of which are fugues.

They are interesting; the fugue was already a dead form by the time of Mendelssohn and he is using it more as a compositional device. Overall I prefer the preludes, I do not find these fugues to fit the romantic style that well (I guess just a personal bias).

If you are interested you can listen the fugues by Anton Reicha; probably the most innovative piece of work since JS Bach, some of them extremely modern. He did not have a lot of success with them though.

So far I've listened to a of of the pieces in Op 35, and admit I do like them...I'm a Mendelssohn fan as well. No way am I going to attempt these any time soon myself, though.

Thank you. I enjoyed the suggestion. I've only played the preludes and dont done any fugues. I cant find anything about 7 charaketerstueke. Can you give some more details? Thanks.

The Anton Reicha fugues sounded a bit too alien for me.
