My favorite was a post on here that i read when i first started. The person wrote something along the lines of "I find that i lack the fortitude to subject myself to this mental torture long enough to get my fingers warm" or loose it may have been. I dont recall the member or what they were refering to but it just stuck with me.

The amusing thing is that I remember things people do and say that they themselves don't remember. Sometimes this causes problems because they don't want to remember, and naturally fight back against me remember it. I've also had people get creeped out by me remembering stuff about them (it does seem stalkerish, doesn't it? laugh ). But my wife, who has a poor memory herself, uses me as the "community memorybank" and asks me about things that happened to her long ago that she doesn't remember. For example, I remember her ex-BFs before me better than she does. laugh laugh

My wife also has a memory like that....photographic. She actually sees images, even typed images of a person's name on their forehead. She can see someone we met 20 years ago, remember their name and details such as what they were wearing and what we spoke about. It really freaks people out. Too bad she doesn't play piano...would be fairly useful. (Gotta figure out how to utilized that for some profit.)

Even professionals can get freaked out! Once, I was describing to a long ago psychiatrist, the circumstances around my weaning and my father taking away my baby bottle, what I did to merit this (I poked a hole in the presumably plastic bottle with a diaper pin with predictable results), what he said, the arrangement and color of the furniture, where I was standing, what I emotionally felt at the time, etc. My psychiatrist listened and then tried to convince me that I was suffering from FMS. I finally gave in and agreed in order to keep the peace, but I know I remembered all that. I confirm all the time things I remember, including by checking old newspapers.

Now this said, I do regret the emotional memory component of this ability, highlighted above, as it has given me a form of PTSD (ergo psychiatrist). Curious if your wife also has the emotional memory component and if so, if it also has given her PTSD.

No, she may be mentally ill in other ways, but not this way wink. JK. I don't believe there is any emotional attachment to these memories. She's fairly detached, actually.

Fun. Unfortunately this got me looking around the internet, and here's a couple with to whom (I wonder if that's good English) they are attributed:

“When she started to play, Steinway came down personally and rubbed his name off the piano. ”
― Bob Hope
“To play a wrong note is insignificant; to play without passion is inexcusable!”
― Ludwig van Beethoven

Btw, I have a good memory for faces but can't play anything from memory on the piano.

regards
Pete

I like this one because I can relate. Playing piano makes me feel good. The more i play the better I get. The better I get the better it makes me feel when I play.

Quote
I started taking piano lessons when I was about four years old. My parents were both musicians. So I took piano lessons. I didn't like the lessons very much, but I was enchanted by music. Music always transported me somewhere. Singing made feel good and being able to play the piano made me feel good.

Great thread cmb. I bookmarked several from "Great Pianist On Piano Playing" which was a good read but one ive been repeating to myself lately comes from Brent Hugh in his Piano Practice Principals,

Learning music is more fun than many things in life, but like every other worthwhile field of human endeavor, there is alot about learning to play the piano that is simple down and dirty, repetitive, no fun, difficult boring WORK. For pianist, the talent for sticking with this kind of difficult, repetitive and boring work is more important than just about any other musical talent".

Its a bit wordy i know but makes a great point.

“Slow practice is undoubtedly the basis for quick playing” — Josef Hofmann.

“Slow practice does not guarantee concentration, but concentration—especially on problems to be solved—necessitates slow playing” — Egan Petri

“The worst possible thing is to start practicing too fast: it invariably leads to bad results and lengthy delays” — Ernest Schelling

“Beware of lazy, automatic repetition of passage without thought or meaning, totally lacking in that concentration without which nothing can ever be learned or understood” — Tobias Matthay

I need to keep reminding myself of this, haha.

LOL. It seems to me that both are impossible. I’ve never mistaken the sound of a piano for the sound of a singer and I’ve never mistaken the sound of a singer for the sound of piano.

But highly prized in classical pianism is to achieve the "singing tone." It seems people can work at their piano technique for years without achieving a "singing tone." I've never knowingly achieved it as I'm not sure I even know what it is! wink Ask your Russian piano teacher about it. Perhaps I would be doing better myself if I knew how to make jello! smile

LOL. I know, I was being purposefully literal in order to make a joke. Beautiful Bösendorfer, wait, no, that’s Placido Domingo!

My violin teacher always told me that pianists had trouble producing a singing tone. Maybe because they’re hammering on strings, I would think, haha. I have no idea why he would bring that up in lessons.

Making jello is easy, sounding good on the piano, or any instrument, is hard. I don’t think the jello is going to do the trick.

More from Chopin:

Simplicity is the final achievement. After one has played a vast quantity of notes and more notes, it is simplicity that emerges as the crowning reward of art.

I wish I could throw off the thoughts which poison my happiness, but I take a kind of pleasure in indulging them.

Every difficulty slurred over will be a ghost to disturb your repose later on.

This last is the source or inspiration for my Signature...which I think is more thorough and has more impact - I even toyed with the idea of adding the phrase "like a rabid pit bull" after the word vengeance but decided against it out of worry of offending a few sensitive dog owners...so I won't.

John

"Difficulties deferred and challenges unmet will eventually return with a vengeance to bite one in the butt." (paraphrasing Chopin)

BTW Tyrone, the saying in your Signature:

Success is 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration.

is attributable to either Albert Einstein or Lebron James...I can't remember exactly which one... smile

"The piano ain't got no wrong notes" - Thelonius Monk

Which reminds me of the famous Morecambe and Wise Grieg Piano Concerto sketch with the late great Andre Previn:-

"I'm playing all the right notes, but necessarily in the right order" - Eric Morecambe

I say, play your own way. Don’t play what the public want — you play what you want and let the public pick up on what you doing — even if it does take them fifteen, twenty years – Thelonious Monk

Funny coming from a guy who looks like Severus Snape smile. His Consolation in Db is still one of my all time favorites to play. Brings me to a different point....I really wish we could post links to pics without importing them into the album.
