They want $350 for the piano and quote $6000 to fix it. One of those numbers is too high and one is too low. Which is which?

Have you checked the price of firewood these days? This may not be such a bad deal after all.

Stored in the garage and asking $350 in cash. They have no shortage of moxie, you have to hand them that!

I guess I’m the sentimental fool here. Poor piano 😢. What in heaven’s name happened to the keyboard? Never mind. I don’t want to know. Poor poor piano.

Common knowledge about pianos is dwindling. On one hand the customers have greatly inflated ideas of what their current piano is worth and almost no idea what a new piano costs. They want to start their child on a 60 year old spinet that was good enough 40 years ago when they got it as children from Aunt Martha.
At least once a month I get a call from someone who asks if we send someone to tune or do they have to bring it in. About ten years ago I noticed that folks quit asking if the piano should be placed on an outside wall or near a heating vent. The PW members are a special bunch in that they have much more general knowledge about pianos but the average consumer out there just has no idea even though there are ample good sources of information on the internet.
Probably the most frustrating is that they expect a tuning to cover every repair. They are shocked when we tell them that only tunes the strings, not fix every sticking/ broken key. I chalk this up to the reduction of customers who own pianos. When I started in the business almost every home had some kind of piano.

I have a friend who has a piano her mother had when she was a child. The piano is nearly completely finished yet talks about donating it to a well known charity here for children would do not have a piano.I have explained to her that the piano is beyond repair. But a few weeks later she tells us again about her proposed donation. So now I do not say anything as I can see it would be unkind .

I volunteered for years in a church thrift shop. Lots of donations came in the front door and went straight out the back door into the dumpster. And I want to point out that it's a good thing, not a bad one.
People hang on to stuff because they can't stand the thought of junking it. It may have so much sentimental value that they can't bear the thought of it "dying" along with their loved one. Donating it allows them to resolve things with some dignity. They believe it's served a higher purpose. Maybe it has. Maybe it hasn't. But there's no need for people to feel bad about having things that they hope might bring some joy to someone else.
The donations come in, and in the aggregate some are worth redistributing and others are not, but nobody wants to close the doors because they've offended anyone. I can gaurantee you that the white elephants mean more to the donator than the mundane practical items do. And you don't want to discourage the useful donations for belittling someone about something else.

The key stop rail is broken or missing. That doesn't mean the action is trashed. Somebody may have been pulling key levers out to check the front bushings.

Missing a key stop rail and the fallboard, the keys will fall out when the piano is on its side. But that is a cheap piano at best.

Yes you are correct. She also has had a technician who told her it is no longer able to be tuned .It is her journey so it is important for her to decide.

This is an excellent (and empathetic) point.
