One of my very good friends just purchased a house in the San Jose area and sent me pics of an upright piano that the seller is interested in leaving behind for a price. My friend was already planning on purchasing an upright for her children to learn on. In addition to trying grand pianos by the four manufacturers I have not yet tried, I planned to help her find an upright when I am in San Jose this summer (this is the trip I referred to in my Bose 225 post).

My friend sent me pics and asked me what she should do.

I told her that she needs to find a good technician to look the instrument over. It's a Kawaii K3 2623880, which I believe is a 2010 Japan manufactured instrument (if I looked it up correctly).

Does anyone know a good technician who could take a look at the instrument? Does anyone have an opinion about this make and model (assuming it checks out with the technician)?

I can't take a look at it because I'm not in northern California, so I can only share with you what she has told me. My husband might be able to play on it when he's there for business next week, if anyone thinks this would be helpful to her. My husband has as much experience testing pianos as I do, as he's played every piano I have looked at on my search (I'm the one looking at the Bose 225 after surveying the market) but he doesn't the repertoire or experience playing that I have.

Thank you everyone,

Kira

Hi - I don't know any tuners/technicians in the South Bay, but the K3 is a really good instrument. I just bought the successor model K300 and am loving its mechanics, tone, and tuning stability. FYI, there's a 2013 K3 for sale on craigslist right now, they're asking $3800 for reference for your friend to see if the cost would be in the right range. https://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/msg/d/dublin-2013-kawai-k3-piano/6859653369.html

I hope they find a terrific instrument for their kids! There are a lot of newish used pianos for sale in the South Bay, so if this isn't the one they should be able to find something soon.

Especially in a private home, it’s hard to imagine anything significantly wrong with it mechanically. Unless it’s a teaching piano, it probably doesn’t have that much wear. You can ask for the contact info of the last technician who tuned it. That person can be a great source of information.

If serial number does date to 2010, I think it should be under warranty until 2020.

For kids learning, it will be all the piano they need for a very long time.

I just talked more with my friend and she said that the home she purchased was an airBNB owned by someone who used it as an investment property that lives abroad. She is unsure if a piano has ever been tuned since it was purchased. I told her she should definitely ask the seller for more information about how the piano is cared for over the past years and that she should definitely good technician take a look at it, Especially if she thinks nothing has been done to it since it was purchased.

She hopes someone here will have a good technician recommendation.

Call San Mateo Piano, they are the Kawaii dealers in the area. I have the card of their recommended tuner, if I dig it up I'll post it here. I haven't used him yet but I can say all of the pianos at the storefront are very well prepared.

Thank you! That was great advice. I just got off the phone with them and have the contact info. I also learned that both the trade in option and the warranty are transferrable to her, which is awesome

I was about to post this recommendation. Bozkurt Eckmen (spelling?) is the owner. I have met him and he is an occasional poster here. When you call San Mateo piano, ask for him. I am sure he will help.

(He may also be wearing a Cunningham Piano Company shirt. I sent one to him in the past and he said he would wear it proudly in his store. smile )

I second that recommendation. Bozkurt is a rare bird: an honest straight-shooter completely devoid of BS.

Last year I purchased a used K5, which is 50" tall vs the K3 at 48". I really love the piano. I believe they have the same action, the Millennium III, which is fantastic. I purchased my piano for $4,500, so you have some form of reference. I can't imagine much being wrong with the instrument in a private home. I'd still like a technician to look at it. I hope this is of some help.

He's "Kurtmen" here on PW, very infrequent poster. Absolute honest and genuine guy, and has the customer's interest at heart.

I gave my friend all the details you've all shared with me. She was thrilled about the piano being highly reccomended, the warrenty info, and the contact names. Thank you!

Apparently I misunderstood her slightly. The buyer wants to unload this piano for a price. I thought it came with the house.

What she's been told so far (not sure if through the realtor or directly with seller) is that it was purchased in 2015 and has had zero turning. Price was offered at "$2500 or something"

What do you all think about that as an initial offer?
