I attended a piano party/recital at Sam and Lourie Smith's place last Saturday and had a great time! Got to hear some real pianists play and got to share my meager back-woods, hillbilly piano playing skills too. smile

Had a great time, good company, good music, and good food!

Thanks Sam and Laurie for a wonderful piano party!

Here is a pic of me playing Laurie's Charles Walter console... sounded great! (The piano anyway... :-)
[Linked Image]

Here's me playing Sam's Harpsichord. Never played one before, but Sam and Laurie started dancing while I was playing, so I must have caught on quick. smile
[Linked Image]

Here's a pic of me playing Sam's 1924 rebuilt C. Bechstein grand piano. It sounded fantastic! Oh, and that is not my normal sitting position; Laurie took the pic before I was properly positioned. smile
[Linked Image]

After the party, Sam and Laurie gave all the attendees a beautiful grand piano shaped pot holder (which I've never seen one just like it) and a "Piano Buddies" coffee cup. What a nice gift! I think Laurie designed and made the piano shaped pot holders by hand.

I would have posted pictures of Sam, Laurie and all the other attendees, but didn't really have their permission to do so. I think that is proper Internet forum etiquette...

Maybe Sam will see this thread and chime in and post more pictures.

Thanks again, Sam and Laurie for a wonderful piano party!! smile

Rick, you look like you know what you are doing, sitting in front of that harpsichord with Scarlatti on the music stand!

Actually, Rick was playing "Wildwood Flower" - sounded great on the harpsichord!

The "Piano Buddies" meet about once a month, no set time or place, somewhere in the "southern crescent" south of Atlanta. It's a good mix of beginners and experienced players, all genres of music. Dessert is involved - we had cake and banana pudding... If you are interested send me a PM.

Sam

You clean up pretty well, for a backwoods hillbilly, Rickster!
Even took the time to match your socks, with your hair. wink

Piano buddies get together looks like a fun time.

In my line of work, just getting two socks to match is an accomplishment! wink

Rickster, you'd better be careful: knowing how susceptible you are to Piano Acquisition Syndrome, playing an exotic German piano could be dangerous!

Yea, the white socks do stick out like a sore thumb, but they do match my hair pretty well... matches the name tag on my shirt too. smile

Sam and Laurie have a beautiful home out in the country and were great hosts!

Hey, I hear you, Ret! smile

Not sure everyone knows this, but Sam is also a very competent piano technician. You wouldn't hear him talk about it much, but he totally rebuilt the C Bechstein, including a new sound board and new pin-block. He did a fantastic job and it looked and sounded great! I had a hard time getting off the piano bench/chair and letting someone else have their turn... smile

Sam mentioned the variety of playing skills represented at the party, but they all sounded good to me. Just seeing how much they enjoyed playing was a joy in itself.

All the best!

Hi Rick, it looks like you all had a lovely time. That photograph of you seated at the Charles Walter is nicely composed; it appears professionally taken and would make a great avatar, if you don't mind appearing in your own avatar, with Laurie's piano!

I miss the days of big old piano parties. Back in the 1990's it seemed there was one each and every month.

Anyway, it looks like you all had a good time. Sam has some cool instruments. I just wish I could have heard some video. :-)

Rich, that harpsichord should look familiar - I bought it from you. It plays now :-)

Thanks for sharing Rickster! What did you play on the harpsichord?
Also what did you think of the harpsichord ,does it suit any genre of
popular music at all.The last time I played one was so long ago.

Like Sam mentioned, I played the old Appalachian tune by Mother MayBelle Carter entitled "The wildwood flower". I also played an old Gospel tune called "Meeting in the air". Both tunes sounded pretty good on the harpsichord. It didn't have a lot of volume, per-se, but it did have a very unique sound and tone. I was intrigued.

During the recital I played one of my original tunes, "Google my name if you want to know who I am". The other guests started singing along and a couple of ladies got up and started dancing. Okay, maybe it wasn't a recital, per-se; maybe it was a musical shindig... smile

Anyway, I remember a lot of smiles and a lot of laughter. Good for the heart and soul... smile

I asked because you loved that old honky tonk upright so
much that you played it on a youtube so successfully.Although
both a harpsichord and a honky tonk piano both have a distinctly different tone colour for some reason I do know why, there seems to be some sort of similarities ? Perhaps not ?
Lovely pictures Rickster !
