My wife and I decided we want to make an investment in our daughters future. After months and months of research, I had it narrowed down to a new Steinway or a Schimmel, or buy a used online Fazioli or Bosendorfer. We were about to make a decision, so at the last minute... I created an account here on Piano World and asked a few questions.

The following day, I get a message from Jeff Tasch at Grand Piano Haus in Chicago to help me out with my selection. Long story short, Jeff had a Bosendorfer 225 for sale. I had a technician come and checked it out. We flew out later to look at it and now its sitting in my living room.

Its a beautiful piano. I swear I can just sit there and look at it all day. My wife is always telling me how she can do things with the piano that she was never able to do with her upright Yamaha. My 6yr old daughter practices daily on the piano. I don't know much about Pianos, but you can tell the quality of this piano. The attention to detail is incredible. An example, the hinge that ties the front lid with the lid has flat head screwdrivers. Those screws were screwed on so that the indentation for inserting a screwdrivers perfectly line up with the other screws. The finish was flawless. Everything about this piano is perfect.

I want to give a big thankst to Grand Piano Haus. Jeff made buying the piano out of state an easy process. Easy to communicate with, everything was disclosed. Jeff worked directly with the movers and kept me posted on the status of piano. He also took plenty of photos and even made a video. Jeff made it easy to schedule a technician. At one point I had a delay in getting the money, Jeff had no issues and worked with me. Without, Jeff... owning a Bosendorfer would never be possible.

Also want to give a shout out to Jeffrey Cappelli. He was the technician who looked at the Bosendorfer and gave me a thumbs up. It is really embarrassing that I refer to Mr. Cappelli as a technician when he has a Master in Piano Performance and true concert pianist. Mr. Cappelli is the founder of the Cappelli Music Institute and owner of Chicago Piano Service. It was only sheer luck that I found Mr. Cappelli on RPT.

Lastly, thanks to Walters Piano moving service. Even though I didn't work directly with them, the Bosendorfer was delivered quite fast and you can tell it was done with some serious care. It took about a month for delivery. It should of been 3 weeks, but I was out of town when the local movers called.

Congrats also. How old is the 225? And how old is your daughter and how long has she been playing piano? She can show her piano playing friends that they can play four notes on her piano that they don't have on their pianos. :-)

Thanks! Its a new piano. It still had the plastic shrink on it.

My daughter is 6. She has been playing for 9 months now. She loves music and we feel she does have some talent. She has a good ear for music. We had to pull a lot of strings to get this piano. At the end, we feel its worth it.

Advice for those who are interested in piano class, make sure you get the right teacher. It will cost you more, but you don't want to develop bad habits with a teacher doesn't either care or know. I am not a piano player, but i never realized there was 5000 different ways to strike a key. I take my daughter to her piano class and never have I seen her old teacher talk about form, poster, hand movement. It was all about, learning new songs and reading sheet music.

That's awesome, Sleepingtiger! What an amazing experience. Purchasing a beautiful grand piano is a very unique experience like none other. You might want to post pictures on our board and post over in the "My New Piano or Keyboard" thread at the top of the Piano Forum page. We love hearing these stories. It allows us to share the joy and relive the delivery of our own piano. Many years of enjoyment to you and your family. The Bosendorfer 225 is a formidable instrument!

New? I guess I misread between the lines and assumed you'd found one second hand.

Can you elaborate on the comment below?

Without, Jeff... owning a Bosendorfer would never be possible.

There are other Bösendorfer dealers, not to mention two who actively participate here. You can buy from whomever you like, of course, but I'm wondering how Jeff made your purchase possible when others couldn't.

I just want to second what was said about Jeff Cappelli, he’s the gentleman who tunes and otherwise cares for my SK7. He’s a really nice person to deal with and infinitely knowledgeable about pianos. And as a bonus, after he tunes my piano he typically sits and plays for a bit which is such a treat since, as Sleepingtiger mentions, Jeff has a degree in piano performance.

Congratulations Sleepingtiger, we’d love to see some pictures.

Sorry, thats my fault. I had everything typed out, looked over my post and thought it was too long winded so i deleted the details.

As we all know, a new Bosendorfer is closer around 160k to 170k new. Pianos like that are reserved for the rich and not average Joe's like me. Never did I once had an inkling I could afford a new Bosie. However, Jeff gave me a great deal, he was really patient with me and never pushed as I gathered the money. In my culture, its really hard to trust anyone. Sending someone that much money really caused me to lose whatever hair i got left. Jeff made the transaction really easy.

I see why I was thinking used. You mentioned in your first paragraph that you'd consider a used Bösie, and that you sent a tech to check it out, which people usually only do for used pianos (although, I think it's smart to do for expensive new ones too--small price to pay for extra comfort, IMO).

Anyway, so he made you feel comfortable, and gave you a good price.

I guess what I'm hung up on is the notion that only this one salesman could make that possible for you. Did you do any comparison shopping?

Congratulations!

I played on a Bösendorfer 225 once, and it was a great instrument.
May you enjoy yours for a long time!

Having a six year old who has played nine months, you did the right thing in trusting the judgement of a dealer who is also a fine pianist about the quality of the tone and touch of the 225 along with having an independent technician inspect the piano as well as flying up to inspect the piano yourself. For such a piano, it is quite difficult to find a place where several brand new 225s are available to compare, and your daughter is almost certainly not in a position to judge what qualities of different instruments she would prefer.

We were very fortunately when we bought our 225 new way back in 1985 that my wife was able to play four different 225s in the same room to compare them and decide which one she liked the most. It probably was the one place in the world that had four 225's (and several 290's and a couple of 275's) all in the same room, side by side.

Congratulations! Please post some photos. We all enjoy seeing them.

Your daughter is very fortunate to have a dad like you. She's learning on the best and will never outgrow this instrument. I'm also glad you found a teacher who will ground your daughter in good piano technique.

Yes! Let's just hope that as her ear develops, she doesn't decide she prefers an American or German sound to the Viennese! wink

Hello everyone. Been so busy working hard trying to payoff that piano. LOL

Anyways, I took some pictures and couldn't find a way to embed the pictures. So I uploaded a video of my daughter playing.
