Hello you lovely people. I've started piano lessons after a 51 year gap and my "new" second hand piano arrived last night.
She's a Hooff & Co Berlin. I've no idea what thateans but she's been well looked after and is awaiting a tune up once she's settled in.
I can find no references to how old she is but I can see that in times gone by she had candle holders which I'll be looking to replace.
If anyone has any information on how I could find out her age I'd be grateful. Her serial number is 8160. She's an upright and almost black. I can't see any way of posting photos.
Anyway, hello.

Hi BikerBurd! Welcome! Don't let anyone tell you your piano is worthless; value is in the ears and fingers of the beholder. Someone with a Pierce Piano Atlas handy, or you yourself with this book, can determine the age of your piano. You may also wish to consult The Piano Book by Larry Fine. It is full of information about piano care and maintenance. You may discover that the candle holders bespeak a "birdcage"; do not be dismayed. Love your piano and enjoy the journey!

Alas, Pierce doesn't have serial numbers on this make, just references to companies with similar names existing in 1852, 1873, and 1882.

Thanks for the information. I've found out she was manufactured between 1880 and 1900. It was refurbished by a Piano Tuner (a Mr David Turner) in Wymondham, Norfolk at a Railway Station where he had a piano shop in 2010 after first refurbishing the train station and turning it into Brief Encounter, a little café/piano shop. A very busy man by all accounts. She is totally beautiful in my eyes and sounds great, if a little 'boomy'.She's settling in to her new home and i'm hoping to book the same man who refurbished her for a piano tuning next month.
Her Ivory keys are very yellowed, i'd love to post photos of her but don't know how. Any advice appreciated. Her back board is gorgeous, lots of decoration. Loving practicing on her. She's my baby lol. Does anyone name theirs?

Hi again, BikerBurd,

Ivory requires some special care to clean/restore; I'm not sure what to do, myself, but I think someone else on this forum could help, especially if you start a new thread on the main piano forum about ivory keys.

A cafe/piano shop sounds thoroughly delightful! Just the sort of place I would frequent.

When I had just acquired a piano, my mother and I thought of the most wonderful name for her, but we both forgot the name before we could write it down, and it is now lost. We decided to call the piano "Nameless Maidele," in honor of the lost name and after the designation "Shaina Maidele." Naming is a lot of fun, and if you find out how to post pictures here, you might get help with a name, too.
