Hello y'all.

I've posted a few threads about the best digital setup, but in the end I've decided to sell my digital setup and buy an acoustic piano. I think I'll be happier in the long run.

I shopped around. My budget was low. Because of this, I expected I'd be looking at used instruments. The one shop that seemed the most flexible financially only had crappy spinets and elderly grands in the used department, which was kinda sad. I went over the digital area and played one that was so awful I think I must have reflexively ran away and landed on the nearest acoustic piano, which happened to be the Kawai 506N. I saw it there before of course, but completely ignored it. Being the snob I am, I reasoned, how could a $4,000 new piano be any good?

It was very strange to me, but to my ear, it was! For whatever reason, I loved this "cheap" piano's sound. Neither bright nor mellow, but quite punchy. To my surprise (and discomfort) I liked the sound better than most of the more expensive Kawai uprights (is something wrong with me?).

Part of me is a little bummed that I didn't get a "cool" piano. Or a sexy one. Or one that other people think is great. But oh well. I made the best decision for my ear and budget. Either way, it comes on Tuesday, and I'm quite excited!

P.S. I do have a question about the finish, which I plan to post shortly....

I agree Kawai makes excellent pianos which have a really lovely tone
Being a new piano it has to adjust to its new environment.Sometimes
new pianos experience "new piano problems "So if the pedal squeaks
or something else happens.Do not hesitate to call the dealer so a technician can correct the problem
It may need more tunings as well depending if it is new to showroom
from the warehouse.
Congratulations on your new piano!

Thanks for all the warm thoughts smile. Definitely excited for when it comes. I can't deny that there are benefits to a digital piano, but there's something about an acoustic that I'm not sure they'll ever be able to replicate.

Enjoy you piano , I'm sure you will get hours of pleasure playing . I have an electric Yamaha piano, at about the same price as yours and am very pleased with it , even though It was within my budget.
There is a 5 year guarantee with it. You can wear your headphones if you don't want to disturb the neighbours.

Thanks y’all. It comes Tuesday! I’ll definitely post pictures of her(?) when she arrives.

Random musings... I gotta figure out a name for her. But it occurs to me that it being 2019, I shouldn’t assume the piano is female. I hope it is. I’d rather play a lady than a dude. More confusing still, perhaps the piano is non-binary. Maybe I should name it Pat so as to cover my bases...

I play viola a little bit, and the instrument that I own has a non-structural grain flaw parallel to the bridge that makes it look like it has a scar from a fight. So, it's a dude named "Pacino." And with "Howard" on the fallboard of my piano, it was already named. I wouldn't get hung up on instrument gender. 😁

It’s kinda fun thinking random things about your new piano while you’re waiting for delivery. I’ll probably be teased forever sharing my thoughts about my own piano.
My C3 is male. His voice is a strong, soaring tenor. I named him Amadeus. Although he does a nice, clean job on classical, he’s much better on rock and roll. He and Linda Ronstadt could “kill it” on the Eagles ballad “Desparado”.
He’s steady. He’s dependable. He’s the band member that’s practiced. He’s the part of this keyboard duo that’s ready for me to work on drills and exercises. He’s always ready to support the temperamental keyboard partner (me) or the emotional vocalist having a bad day. Amadeus turned 7 years old last month and admits he’s slightly spoiled because he’s tuned every 6 months and voiced or regulated as required. Amadeus is built strong for a professional musician or piano students who put his innerds to the torture test, but since I own and care for him, he won’t be subjected to torture or ill treatment.

Like your description of Amadeus, j&j! smile

I don't have names for my pianos, but my C7 is a bit like your Amadeus... can do great classical and can get-down with some up-beat oldies! I pounded out a little James Brown's "I feel good" last evening. Made me smile; no, wait, made me laugh out loud... smile
