This piece often puts me in a bit of a trance and I'd have to be mindful not to lose the pulse.
I wanted to give this Prelude an ethereal quality and thus played all of it with Una Corda pedal, except for the climax towards the end. The Estonia piano's Una Corda is especially gorgeous, bringing out many lush overtones whilst still maintaining that signature crystalline clarity. |

This little gem is a prelude of turbulent relentless triplets. Many interpretations have a rather slow tempo with a calm, soothing nature. A good example being Andras Schiff. On the other end of the tempo spectrum we have good old Glenn Gould with an almost robotic precision.
I personally feel that this prelude is best suited to be played with more agitation and turbulence in the dynamics, with a bit of playful variation in phrasing. Furthermore, when I looked at the score closely I found numerous ways of bringing out some hidden lines. HJ Lim does this to an extreme (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zfCUwpKs86s). However, I am only human and can only focus on one hand at a time. Attempting to bring out multiple counterpoint voices simultaneously really does break the brain.
Thus, in the end I mostly stuck with the main melody in the bass line. Some triplets could be a lot cleaner and the tempo could be more consistent with more practice, but I am pretty satisfied with the expressions I managed to convey. |

This recording is probably a 2nd take but I use this as a soft warm up for playing other Bach pieces, and starting longer practice sessions. I feel like there are some dirty notes in the beginning, but I think it was sticky fingers..I am playing staccato and keeping pedalling to a minimum, I personally like using the pedal in Bach just to help with musicality. |

Yes. It's a tad crude, when you compare it to the likes of Beatrice Berrut, but I am, after all, primarily an ageing Rocker.

There were quite a few concepts new to me like polonaise rythm with its specific accents, legato thirds (with interesting fingerings), playing deep into black keys, executing subito piano and different dynamics within slurs and others. It's great piece for honing technique.
In the recording I made an awkward pause before last passage, but it was my best take so far, so I decided to go with it as my hands were shaking more and more with every try.

This set from the well tempered clavier has always been a favorite of mine due to the urgency and drama of it. The prelude starts out as a kind of perpetual mobile and then dives into a fantasia coda. I love how the last descending line of this prelude briefly outlines the main theme of the following fugue. I debated for a while whether to play the notes detached or legato; in the end I chose an in between that I thought flowed well. |

I decided to start off the opening fugue subject quiet and hushed without staccato accents, and gradually increase the volume and staccato as the piece goes on and gets more dramatic with the added cacophony if voices. |

I tried to bring out the conversation between the voices. I found out that the more I play the piece, the less ornaments I use, because I found them distracting from the ideas conveyed in the piece.
Somewhere in the future I might be able to do this piece some justice, and then I'll probably use different ornaments in some chosen places.

Unlike many people, I strongly favor fugues over preludes, and even though I started learning this fugue much later than the prelude, it came together more quickly. I'm glad to see that the wonderful Pika Pianist has submitted the prelude. In any case, this is far from being ready, it has some hiccups and is slower than I would have liked to play it but this is what I've managed in this relatively short time. I just love, love working on Bach's fugues, and it's been a while, so I enjoyed it and will continue working on it. |
