Additional info:This prelude really demonstrates how beauty can be found in simplicity. This piece often puts me in a bit of a trance and I'd have to be mindful not to lose the pulse.

I wanted to give this Prelude an ethereal quality and thus played all of it with Una Corda pedal, except for the climax towards the end. The Estonia piano's Una Corda is especially gorgeous, bringing out many lush overtones whilst still maintaining that signature crystalline clarity.

Additional info:Love it or loathe it, I seem to have a penchant for playing Baroque pieces in an aggressive staccato style (Examples that comes to mind are my Bach Invention 13 in A minor and Scarlatti K64 Sonata). This little gem is a prelude of turbulent relentless triplets. Many interpretations have a rather slow tempo with a calm, soothing nature. A good example being Andras Schiff. On the other end of the tempo spectrum we have good old Glenn Gould with an almost robotic precision.

I personally feel that this prelude is best suited to be played with more agitation and turbulence in the dynamics, with a bit of playful variation in phrasing. Furthermore, when I looked at the score closely I found numerous ways of bringing out some hidden lines. HJ Lim does this to an extreme (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zfCUwpKs86s). However, I am only human and can only focus on one hand at a time. Attempting to bring out multiple counterpoint voices simultaneously really does break the brain.

Thus, in the end I mostly stuck with the main melody in the bass line. Some triplets could be a lot cleaner and the tempo could be more consistent with more practice, but I am pretty satisfied with the expressions I managed to convey.

Additional info:I learned this piece in high school and dreaded playing it because I could never play it "clean". This recording is probably a 2nd take but I use this as a soft warm up for playing other Bach pieces, and starting longer practice sessions. I feel like there are some dirty notes in the beginning, but I think it was sticky fingers..I am playing staccato and keeping pedalling to a minimum, I personally like using the pedal in Bach just to help with musicality.

Additional info:This is another invention I learned in HS. I struggled with keeping this even, and there are a few awkward pauses here and there but overall, I tried to keep a steady tempo/rhythm and to make it sound musical (which explains the generous pedaling in some parts) Hope it is enjoyable!

Additional info:Lovely piece I heard from another member, so I resolved to play it myself. It took a long time . . . .Now, it doesn't seem too difficult when listening. But it took me over a year of spasmodic practice (I had a lot on my plate, and still have) to lick it into shape.
Yes. It's a tad crude, when you compare it to the likes of Beatrice Berrut, but I am, after all, primarily an ageing Rocker.
Out of my depth as usual, but . . . who cares? Not me, obviously!

Additional info:This was my most advanced piece so far and I learned a lot while working on it. There were quite a few concepts new to me like polonaise rythm with its specific accents, legato thirds (with interesting fingerings), playing deep into black keys, executing subito piano and different dynamics within slurs and others. It's great piece for honing technique.

In the recording I made an awkward pause before last passage, but it was my best take so far, so I decided to go with it as my hands were shaking more and more with every try.

I hope you'll enjoy listening to it anyways.

Additional info:I really like the playful nature of this Invention: bubbly and excitable, yet intellectual and disciplined. The compound triple meter can be tricky to accent and control properly, but other than that this Invention isn't one of the more difficult ones (unless played very fast). I wanted to play some parts detached and more melodic lines legato, but most people play it all detached.

Additional info:A hauntingly beautiful piece. I really like how the detached 2 notes at the end tail of the subject kind of give it a dance quality despite the introspective atmosphere. The implied swing rhythm influenced the tempo I chose.

Additional info:I found this one to be a bit more confusing to both understand and perform than some of the others. For one thing the beat in the countermelody starts while the main theme ends, and to add to that there are lots of different trill values throughout. I spent a lot of time coming up with this interpretation and gained a new appreciation for the piece.

Additional info:This is the second prelude from book 1 of Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier. This set from the well tempered clavier has always been a favorite of mine due to the urgency and drama of it. The prelude starts out as a kind of perpetual mobile and then dives into a fantasia coda. I love how the last descending line of this prelude briefly outlines the main theme of the following fugue. I debated for a while whether to play the notes detached or legato; in the end I chose an in between that I thought flowed well.

Additional info:Bach's Fugue No. 2 in C Minor from Book 1 of the Well- Tempered Clavier. The fugue subject (main theme) draws from the closing motif from the coda of the Prelude in C minor. This is one of my favorite fugues. I decided to start off the opening fugue subject quiet and hushed without staccato accents, and gradually increase the volume and staccato as the piece goes on and gets more dramatic with the added cacophony if voices.

Additional info:I submitted both a video and an mp3. The YouTube video was taken in November 2018 and is currently the only video I have of me playing. The MP3 I recorded just now, for the sake of complying with the recital...

I tried to bring out the conversation between the voices. I found out that the more I play the piece, the less ornaments I use, because I found them distracting from the ideas conveyed in the piece.
Somewhere in the future I might be able to do this piece some justice, and then I'll probably use different ornaments in some chosen places.

Thank you very much for listening!

Additional info:I selected this piece for this recital when I decided to join in the last moment - it was polished during one week of rather short sessions, after being put aside for more than 1 year. I am still not satisfied with the version, but I hope it manages to communicate the profound meaning of this chorale. For me it is either like a voice of humanity asking for redemption, that stands both in Ambrosian, and Lutheran text, or like a voice of divinity mourning over human condition.

Additional info:This is not perfect, there are bobbles here and there. the 2nd repeat for the second half, it is a bit sloppy as I was getting tired. This was not 1st take, it was between this version and another take that sounded more musical but there were more awkward pauses so trashed that other copy. I only learned this 2 months ago so there is room for improvement, but I love playing it.

Additional info:So, I picked the prelude and fugue in D minor for this recital a while ago but was busy with other pieces (+life) and didn't start working on them nearly early enough. Unlike many people, I strongly favor fugues over preludes, and even though I started learning this fugue much later than the prelude, it came together more quickly. I'm glad to see that the wonderful Pika Pianist has submitted the prelude. In any case, this is far from being ready, it has some hiccups and is slower than I would have liked to play it but this is what I've managed in this relatively short time. I just love, love working on Bach's fugues, and it's been a while, so I enjoyed it and will continue working on it.
