In the 1980's and 1990's Young Chang was a very popular piano. I recently spoke with someone who told me they are now owned by Samick? They use laminated soundboards? I knew they starting out making Yamahas and then went into business. Are they out of business? Still considered a good instrument?

Hi RayR,

You are correct. In the 1990's Young Chang had improved enough and expanded enough that it was thought that they would become more of a factor in the industry than they have. Rough financial conditions, bad management (?), and a bankruptcy all converged put the brakes on expansion. Frankly, if a few other things happened they would not exist at all today.

Full Disclosure - for a time in the 1990's and early 2000's we carried and sold Young Chang pianos.

My 2 cents,

Before we start spreading rumors, the full scoop on Young Chang can be found HERE....

Your "someone" was wrong - Young Chang has been owned by the Hyundai Development Group since 2006 - not Samick.

I had a friend in the 80's who bought a new upright Samick piano. It has lasted for ages.I have never played a Young Chang but there is a forum member a piano teacher who owns a Young Chang.
