So is there a consensus? The HD 600 and 650s are out of my price range so I'm planning on getting Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO 80 ohms for digital piano playing and listening to music. Reading CyberGene comments there for a moment made me rethink my choice but still I think that's what I'm going to get. Supposedly the 80 ohms are more bassy than the others. Has anyone played with them on digitals?

Curious question: Anybody here that ever tried these:

https://www.focal.com/headphones/clear/

Would probably make a good upgrade to my DT-880 while keeping the neutrality. laugh

I’ve tried the Elear. Nice headphones! But honestly I can’t see myself spending that much money on headphones. Even the HD-650 are already overpriced IMO. If you take into account something like Superlux HD-681 EVO can be made for €30.

Are you really seeking a consensus?

Is a product good just because a bunch of other people say so? I tend to think that a product is good because I say so. smile

Well, if you live in an apartment and good audiophile speakers are questionable because of sensitive Neighbors (subs are a definite no-go ._. ), you start looking into these kind of options.

Maybe I'll give them a try. At least for science, so I know whether my ears would hear the difference. laugh

@mac: well sort of. While ultimately your ears (and head, many cans are good sounding but uncomfortable to wear) have to be the judge, reviews and opinions of others can help narrow a huge field.

Even my DT-880 slap me in the face when I feed them crappy recordings. :X

That's why you always keep a ... more forgiving can around.

True. My latest pair cost £20.

My favorite headphones are the Bose QuietComfort 25. I use them for everything these days, whilst my other headphones are gathering dust. Yes, they are not as analytical as expensive Sennheisers, AKGs or Beyerdynamics, but I do find the sound pleasant and engaging, and best of all, the world around me doesn't exist anymore. Gone are the annoying sounds of my Yamaha S90ES. I even bought a second pair (you can get them really cheap these days on the used market) for movie watching, etc.

And they're going back tomorrow. The days of the cheap, semi decent headphone seems to be over.

That's right, peter. Today "cheap" means "indecent". smile

You seem determined to buy these headphones without having tried them on a piano. I don't know for how much but based on my experience something like HD58X are vastly superior (and very close to HD600) at $150 when offered on Massdrop. Even the HD598 are better than the 770s for piano (and yes also the above mentioned Koss at $20 are much better, but nobody cares about them cause after all at that price they can't possibly be that good or even good at all, can they?)

There has to be something between the JVC HAL 50 (45 grams , poor sound, 9$) and Samson SR850 (476 grams, big sound, $32.50)

Ok I use AIAIAI TMA-2 for mixing and any music stuff - somehow clicked with me. But for listening I used to love the Beyerdynamic Custom One Pro because you can actually mechanically set the response. But since I've got the Plantronics Backbeat pro bluetooth ones, they sit in the drawer.

I've never before heard of AIAIAI headphones. Did Old MacDonald use them on his farm? smile

:-) The only excuse may be that it is a danish company... They had to came up with this name!

To be honest they are virtually indestructible, no joints that would break and everything is fully replaceable and the speakers upgradeable. Different speaker units are like 90 bucks. I was kind of curious at first but they grew on me a lot. Very ear friendly even for very long listening. Yeah, you don't really hear people saying they bought AIAIAI headphones... but the company does it well.
