Uff...This is my third post in 2 days. Never thought buying a piano would be so stressful. I just found a C. Bechstein, 2005, 6'9''. Gorgeous instrument!!! Asking price is 23K from a private seller. I will send a technician to look at it. Is that a good price? The only thing I hate is the green felts. How hard is to change that?

Uh - that would be an incredible price. I mean - truly incredible. At that price I wouldn't care if the felts were green, purple or orange.

Are you sure the seller is legitimate? Also - is it a top of line C. Bechstein, or the lower (still quite good) Academy series?

I just found another C. Bechstein, 2005, 7' for sale by a private seller here in Arizona. Asking price about $28.5K.

If you like the piano and it checks out that would be an incredibly good price...almost impossible to believe.

One correction: it is a Bechstein, not a C. Bechstein. Is there a difference?

Not that I'm aware of.

What is the model number?

The model it is A208. It turns out it is the Academy series. Is it still worth 23K?

Given that the price of a NEW A208 is three times that amount, I'd say YES a 14 year old A208 in excellent condition would be well worth $23K. If you look at the following chart you'll see that the Academy series compares well with other top tier instruments.

Yes. Recent Bechsteins without the C are from the less expensive range.
Alternatively, these ranges are known as C.Bechstein Academy or C.Bechstein Concert.

However, "less expensive" in this case is relative. The Academy series pianos are still doggone expensive.

It sounds like a good price if you like it. I recently bought a very nice 2005 Grotian 192 on consignment from a dealer for a similar price.

It is a good price, unless there is a problem of which we are all unaware.

Regarding the green felts, learn to live with them.

If you buy it, PM me and I will give you details of the Bechstein owners' club.

I love the green felt. My ancient one came with blue/turquoise felt.

Green felt is traditional on Bechsteins. Changing it would be extremely expensive.

If it's just the felt on the fallboard it wouldn't be a big deal.

FYI. I contacted Bechstein in Germany to confirm the origin of the piano and they responded in less than 24 hours:

Dear Mr. XXXXXX

thank you very much for your message.

The piano with serial number XXX.XXX was made in our German manufactory in Seifhennersdorf in 2005, July 22. It is a grand piano model A 208, black polished.

We hope this information is useful for you. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us again.

Mit freundlichen Grüßen / With kind regards,

i.A. Theresa Niehus

Bechstein used to be made in Berlin, but in the early 1990's they relocated to the Zimmerman facilities in Seifhennersdorf in Saxony.

I found a couple of A208 (which is indeed from the Academy series) for sale in Germany. One is brand new, at 43000 EUR:

The other one is from 2017 and used, at 36000 EUR:

Well. Given that a brand new one is 43K EUR (~USD$48K), is a 2005 (15 years old) worth USD$23K? Should I offer less for it?

You should always offer less than the asking price! Otherwise you miss out on the glorious feeling of having snatched up a deal.
