For those who are interested, the Hilton Head International Piano Competition started yesterday and is continuing through March 18th.

It is live streaming now at the above link, plus you can listen to previously streamed sessions as well. They are currently in Round 1.

Some of these pianists are really good. I'm liking Arisa Onoda from Japan and Jacob Kuszlik from Poland so far. We'll see who makes it into Round 3.

This is a really fascinating competition to me. I always figured it as one of the common stepping stones to the bigger competitions like the Cliburn for example. I'm finding this to be quite accurate. There are young pianists from impressive pedigrees who seem like they're still finding themselves as far as what they have to say. There are pianists who are a bit older who seem to have been around the block a few times as far as competitions and are urther along as artists. Then, there are some of the older pianist who are very very good musicians, but maybe not quite as pianistically equipped or maybe not the most compelling of musicians, but are putting themselves out there so we can hear and enjoy and enjoy I do.


I think this is a fun watch. It's far more unpredictable than the top tire competitions.

Hmm, I agree with the judges's picks excepting one I would have switched out for the older Russian, but I do think we in this country care less for those sort of aesthetics. I think it's vice versa when one sees the International Tchaikovsky.

Maybe it's just my exhaustion, but I definitely feel like playing was better in round 1 in general, advancing competitions included. Thoughts?
