Another poster made a good point in my desert island Chopin thread about getting tired of any one composer. So I'm making a new thread. Choose the five composers you can't live without. This includes each composer's entire oeuvre.

Too many supremely great composers to choose just five. But I can choose around thirteen based on their piano music only:
Bach, Scarlatti, Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Liszt, Brahms, Debussy, Ravel, Prokofiev, Scriabin.

J S Bach
Tchaikovsky
Verdi
Sibelius
Ravel/Prokofiev (tied sorry, couldn’t choose)

Not selected solely for piano music obviously!

PS After studying him for two years solid as part of my music A level syllabus I’m afraid I can categorically live without Joseph Haydn!

Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Rachmaninov.

Next five would be: Mendelssohn, Tchaikovsky, Ravel, Mahler, Sibelius.

Next five would be

"I don't play accurately - anyone can play accurately - but I play with wonderful expression. As far as the piano is concerned, sentiment is my forte. I keep science for Life."

Is there a piano on this island? A tuning wrench, or better yet, Gilligan knows how to tune?

I guess I tire less than most. grin
I'd be fine with just Chopin.

If I'm allowed to pick 5:

Chopin
Bach....

Actually I'm totally more than fine with just Chopin and Bach. I was already fine with Chopin.
But hey, I get 3 more for free.... ha

Schubert
Brahms....

hmmm.....last one is often the toughest.....

Would have to think about it.

Nominees:
Beethoven
Mozart
Scriabin
Schumann
Scarlatti
Handel
Joplin
Bob Gaudio (wrote many of Frankie Valli/The 4 Seasons songs)

My first four are easy: Bach, Schubert, Mahler, Brahms.

No.5 - hmmm, difficult. Richard Strauss? Bartok? Berg? Faure?

What are some of your favorites by him? The Fig Leaf's C theme is one of the most beautiful things he wrote.

This is much easier than your other threads smile
Scriabin
Scarlatti
Franck
Shostakovich
Medtner

The 6th place belongs to modern music in general, I cannot name one composer but sometimes my ears just crave for dissonance and atonality and freedom from musical traditions. I do like Chopin, but I have noticed I can live without him...

Mozart

Rachmaninov

I can also live without Bach and Chopin if I had to.

With Scott Joplin it's difficult to pick a favourite. Additionally, odd bits stand out (well, to me) though, like the 2nd 'theme' (including the 'lead-in' from the 1st) in Palm Leaf Rag, and I play that bit rather slowly just to enjoy it - but other than that most of them have at one time been my 'favourite.'

regards
Pete
