I recently bought a pair of studio monitors to replace my crap bookshelf speakers.
I expected the monitors would be better than what they were replacing ... but in fact they're much much more better than I expected.

The result is something I thought not possible: The monitors sound better than the headphones.

That's a first for me. And, judging from what I've been reading here and elsewhere for years, it's been deemed next to impossible.
But there it is. Not impossible after all.

Movie and TV mix stages use monitors, not headphones. Expensive ones, of course, and in a carefully designed room.

yeh Mac, spill the beans, but are you sure? It takes time to judge new speakers at home, maybe after the honeymoon phase is over you'll change your mind?

Okay, here are the beans ...

You might have missed several threads about them that I posted over the past few weeks ...
(a) seeing these monitors, nearly new, on Craigs List and then buying them ... and
(b) seeking advice on isolation pads for them ... and
(c) seeking advice on putting protective cover cloth on them.

I called them out as Adam Audio T7V. These are two-way near-field monitors with a 7" drivers and ribbon tweeters.

They retail for $500 the pair. I got them nearly new for $400.

They replaced a pair of Polk RT-15 bookshelf speakers. I retained a pair of JBL towers as a low-end supplement for the monitors.

Nice one! But, now you have to upgrade your headphones, of course.

Depends on the headphones, I doubt that monitors this cheap would sound better than my DT-880, esp in an untreated room.
Congrats on the purchase though. laugh

It's true. I currently have my piano going through a couple of hifi 8" woofers placed in an open backed small enclosure. I'm waiting for some decent leads to connect the other elements. And even without mid range or tweeters, it still sounds considerably better than through headphones. Money well spent.

Hi Mac,

I suppose the speakers are calibrated for the player to experience the best listening experience...

I'm curious what the drop-off in sound quality is like for others nearby?
How does it sound for a casual listener in the same room?

thanks,

Glad you found a great solution -

Jack

I prefer playing over the JBL monitors than headphones - I prefer the sound not to be right in my ears closed by a couple of headphone cups...couple that with a pair of decent monitors and it is not that impossible as Mac has discovered...however they (monitors) need to be placed near field to the player. Under the DP they sound p*ss poor...

lol Mac,,,

Ach, you know you'll want to upgrade ;-)

After all, if the current pair of mid-high range Adams' beat your old headphones, your mission surely has to be to find a better pair of headphones which trump your Adams' monitors, and then top them with even better Adams monitors.

Ah, the sweet circle of G.A.S.

Ooh I know that one too well.
Never was afflicted by G.A.S. though, I am too poor for that to happen. ._.

I too much prefer playing into monitors than headphones. I have both Shure SRH440 and a set of Sennheiser HD280. For monitors I use the JBL LS308 speakers. But I also keep my gig rig setup at home going through a 3-way Roland CM220 system. I much prefer either of these to the cans. I just don't like the sound right in my ears. And they get uncomfortable after awhile, plus the frickin cord annoys me. I tried buying a Sennhieser wireless system but it was crap it had a noticeable hiss and would drop out at times. They are RF not bluetooth. I'm told the latency is noticeable on bluetooth?

The only cans I like are the Bose QuietComfort noise canceling Bluetooth ones I use at work. They do a good job of filtering out all the din and allow me to concentrate while listening to quiet music.
