Very interesting. Aside from the actual problem reported, I'm interested if the new NxX generation actually means the action parts have been changed (the plastic parts replacing wood in the N3) and if this change carries over to the N1X, as well as to Yamaha's acoustic grand pianos!

Do any of the current C(x) acoustic grands use such plastic components?

Yes, that's what I was asking (but in a less concise way ;)) doesn't have to be C_x either, perhaps the GH does?

I don’t think Yamaha acoustic grands using any plastic parts in the action. The first generation of AG uses plastic repetition lever. The N3X uses the same action as the even older yamaha GranTouch hybrids, which makes both repitition lever and the jack plastic. I’m not a technician so I don’t know the impact on this. I’m a little bit concerned about this because I only saw plastic parts used in action in pianos made in China. But the GranTouch hybrids seem to be working fine for 10-20 years.

I was able to play the N1X today. I brought my computer and everything worked fine with the audio interface. It shows up as "AvantGrand" on my computer. The internal speakers made my VSL CFX/Steinway sound a little bit muddy compared to my studio monitors. They did have it pushed right up against a wall and the 16cm bass speaker on the AG is facing the wall. I played some recorded music through the internal speakers and it sounded fine, but again, not as clear and crisp as my studio monitors. I'm curious if the two speaker systems combined would make a good combination.

It was interesting to notice how much different (I would say better) the VSL CFX sounded compared to the updated internal CFX samples in the AG (which also sounded good). Even the sales reps commented on the better sounding VSL CFX when I switched back and forth between the two samples sets using the onboard speakers.

The action didn't feel any different than the N1 and they wouldn't take the fall board off for me to take measurements. They would only allow their technician to do it and I guess he wasn't there. The key dip (7/16") was the same compared to the Yamaha acoustics in the store. I experienced no problems with sticking keys as mentioned earlier in this thread.

I ended up purchasing the N1X for $7,446.25 ($8,050.00 out the door). They are ordering it directly from Yamaha and it should be here in 1-2 weeks.

I'll be selling my MP11SE soon if anyone is interested.

God Bless,
David

P.S. I've been totally happy with the MP11SE. I'm definitely a diehard Kawai fanboy and I'm not ashamed to admit it.

I guess nobody follows my epic NU1X thread but in a turn of events I decided to return it and take a N1X instead, so that should happen hopefully in a month.

I followed some of the thread (enough to hear a few of your beautiful recordings), but I haven't kept up with it. I'll go back and read about your experience. It sounds interesting.

I've advanced a few more lessons and have a couple songs ready to record. I just need to find the time to do it.

One thing I forgot to mention that I was a little disappointed in was that the N1X didn't register key-off velocities. It only registered a consistent 64 every time.

The specifications in the manual show support for key-off samples, but I guess thats just for the internal sounds. Maybe I'm missing something in the settings menu.

God Bless,
David

My P-515 does register them.

As with most conventional digital pianos, the P-515 uses rubber switches beneath the keys, whereas the N1X (and NV10) use optical sensors mounted above the hammers. As such, it is not possible to detect key-off velocities with such a system.

Kind regards,
James

True for the NV10, but the N1X has key sensors too (at least according to the specs sheet), so it is a bit puzzling.
