Hi,

I'm interested in hearing pianists that are skilled improvisers that don't necessarily improvise in the Jazz tradition.
Do you have any favourites? Or perhaps an album you can recommend?

For example an album that comes to mind is 'Book of Ways' by Keith Jarrett. This is one of my all time favourite albums. It's the only album of his I know where he improvises in a much more classical mode.

Any recommendations would be much appreciated.

Prof. John Mortensen of Cedarville University offers online a $1/month basic class and $5/month advanced class in historical keyboard improvisation. This is definitely not jazz.

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
...
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the Schifference.

I've seen both Mortensen and Montero perform, and I was impressed by both of them.

This thread also reminds me of Emile Naoumoff's YouTube channel. His claim to fame is, of course, that he studied with Nadia Boulanger. He's posted 6397 (and counting) improvisations to his channel.

To say nothing of his fascinating collection objects on the desk behind him.

He did not just study with her; he was the last student she took, the "gift of my old age", in her words. When I was in the US I only knew Naoumoff as that teacher in Indiana, author of the solo piano transcription of Fauré's Requiem, and the previous teacher of my best friend, whom she spoke very fondly of and visited in Bloomington often. Then some years later I watched Bruno Monsaingeon's "Mademoiselle" (such an inspiring film) and almost teared up when I realized that the brilliant kid behind Boulanger (who a few minutes later talks about his composition projects, including a piano concerto), is him. For a while I watched his improvisations on youtube often.
