Hi All,
I have the old Stichel Leipzig piano. Serial number probably 2473 (I knew it but I can't find it now).

I'm thinking about the future of the piano. I like the piano wery much because it has been in my family for ages:)

What do you think, is it worth to be restored?
All answers will be appreciated.

There is probably no economic value to having it restored. Sentimental value is something else. Whether it has enough sentimental value depends on what it would cost to restore it.

If it has the dampers over the hammers, or if it does not have cast plate that extends over the tuning pins, it is likely not worth restoring.

Thank you very much for your answer.

I enclose additional photo to help to explain the technical matters as I'm not a professionalist:)
There is the cast plate.

Could you please tell me something about the Stichel brand from your professional view?
Is it a valuable brand and worth restoring or just a typical piano as many others?

That has the dampers over the hammers, which is not desirable. I am not familiar with the particular brand. There were a lot of small piano companies in Germany from the period that this piano looks like it came from, and they have no brand recognition. So spending money on restoration is not a good idea.

The piano hasn't been played for a very long time, about 40 years, and needs tunning.
My grandma hasn't told me about other problems.

The photograph shows that ths piano needs regulation as it is currently not in a playable condition. I'm certain that you could find a much better and younger piano in Poland for not much more than the money you might have to spend to get this one revived.

Ian ( also with a Leipzig manufactured piano)

Personally I wouldn't have the piano restored. It's perfectly possible to spend around 10,000 Euros on this piano, have a new tuning block put in, a new action put in, the keyboard restored or replaced, and the soundboard restored or replaced, with the casework repolished to new condition, and it would probably be a very respectable piano. It does have a beautiful case - as did many pianos of that time - and it's probably of a formidable build quality.

But after restoration the piano will not be worth anything like the money you pay to have it restored, and for 10,000 Euros you could get a Yamaha U1 or piano of similar quality, and if you're looking for a piano to practise on, a U1 would be much better than this piano.

So, financially, it's not worth restoring. Whether or not you want to have it restored because it was your grandma's is a different matter, and while I wouldn't go down that route for this piano, many others have had worse pianos than this restored and been delighted with the results.

Pierce has an F. Stickel in Leipzig, 1877, but not this name.
