A year and a half ago, I started learning piano at the drop of a hat. I went out and picked up a Yamaha DGX-660. It was awesome for learning.

I recently hit RCM5 and felt like it was starting to hold me back. So, I went out and bought an acoustic grand.

I still have the digital because it has all of the recording options and I keep saying that I “might” want to record songs one day.

How many of you ever actually go back to your digital after the upgrade? I have tried, but it just doesn’t compare and I still think that I may want it one day. I keep thinking that I will regret selling it.

PS. I tried searching for it but all I get are “acoustic vs digital” threads and articles. The three words always come up with such results.

If you have the space, I suggest keeping it. It's worth $500 absolutely max as a used DGX-660 - will always (not literally, of course) be worth $300. I'm assuming, since you bought a grand, you have sufficient $$ flexibility that cashing it out isn't critical - which brings me back to my original point: if you have the space, hang on to it!

PS: A lot of folks on the forums have both a digital and an acoustic - maybe for recording, maybe for all the different instrument sounds, maybe for headphone practicing. You, too, can be one of these folks!

I kept mine for about a year or so, at which point I wiped off the dust, played it for 90 seconds, listed it on OfferUp, and it's gone.

I practice on my digital when my neighbour is using using his noisy lawn
mower or I want to practice and not let anyone hear me "drilling sections"of a piece .

I bought my digital for silent sessions while someone is catching a Sunday nap, listening to the stereo, when I’m just starting to play a difficult piece. I haven’t used the record feature for awhile but it’s nice to have that feature. My full featured 88 key keyboard only weighs 26 pounds so if I decide to jam with some friends, it’s MUCH easier to move than my C3 and don’t have to rely on some pitiful bar piano 😀.

I use mine with my PC to record MIDI with garritan CFX etc. But I have a VPC1 which has a pretty good action, though its a bit heavy.

I have both, and recommend it. Headphone practice and saving wear and tear on the acoustic make the digital worth having. Of course it has to be a good enough digital.

If you can keep both, I sure would. I'm not too familiar with the Yamaha DGX-660. Maybe someday you could upgrade your digital as well.

I still keep my digital but very rarely play on it and that is only for silent playing. And yes I thought selling it once but there wasn't any good offer so I kept it.

You are right that besides silent playing you won't want to play your digital.

Would I regret if I had sold it? Not much I guess.

That depends how good the digital is. I'm about 50-50 between the acoustic and the digital. Practice on two radically different instruments helps with adapting to whatever you may have to play on a gig.

I enjoy my Casio Privia PX310 digital piano a lot. I've used it many times to play at outdoor events and a few Churches. It's light and easy to transport. Plus, I can pound on it pretty hard and not worry too much about breaking it. If I break it, I'll buy another one, and a better one. I also like all the different accompaniments, tones, drum-beats, etc... and there are a LOT of them available.

I like to play it with the key-board amp and turn up the volume cause my hearing aint the best, and sometimes I just like to play loud.

I've had a lot of fun with it.

Keep the digital if you can. You'd likely not get close to what you paid for it anyway.

And, as JohnSprung said, it is a benefit to play on different feeling/playing keyboards/pianos. It can help develop control and adaptation to divers feeling instruments at different venues.

Thanks for some of the insight and reasons why I may want to keep it. It really gives me more to think about that just the fact that it is sitting in a corner collecting dust.

Go to a store and try some of the current digitals with good actions -- MP11SE, CP88, etc. If you find one that you like a whole lot more than what you have, consider trading up, or maybe sell and replace later if you find you need a digital. I use mine a lot for headphone practice.
