One of the YouTube pianists I follow made this recently where she asks a bunch of questions to the head piano technician of the RCM Toronto. It covers how the action works, how it's adjusted, how to clean your piano, how often to tune, how do decide if you need to get used to the piano or have it adjusted, and all kinds of other stuff. It's frankly amazing, well worth the 1/2 hour watch. And, in the video description, the author has a link to every section by time so you can reference it. I've never seen one video that's so comprehensive, I learned a ton. I missed the new notification too, it just popped up in my "next video" list or I would have missed it. Anyway, enjoy!

Very nice video and worthwhile. It might be good to recommend new owners check it out. Even long time owners may view the innards as mysterious. This may help them understand why we recommend certain maintenance actions.

I like it. Thanks.

I really like that video. I had posted it to the piano forum a few weeks ago too, but almost better here as more beginners are unfamiliar with pianos. I know I don't really know anything about pianos until I saw this video.

Saved to Watch Later - looks really interesting! Goes well with the book I'm reading (The Piano Shop on the Left Bank).

Great video, thank you!

When I first got my piano, it was 109 years old (it's eleventy-one this year) and it had 109 years of accumulated finger grease on the keys. (Yeccch!) So I ended up taking all the keys off and cleaning them one by one with a damp cloth and weak detergent solution. Talk about baptism by fire! laugh

I didn't do that without talking to my friendly neighbourhood piano technician first, by the way. I was terrified about putting the keys back in the wrong order or something, but he said that would be impossible. And in fact it was - for one thing, they are numbered.

Sorry Tyrone, I missed your post! But I agree, it's useful here in ABF smile

The other trick for that is to take a black sharpie and draw diagonal lines on the top of the bare wood part in each section. That's the quick way to see that you've got them all in the right place.
