After seeing trandinhnamanh's photo of the caster cups he made in his "Hamburg Steinway C-227" post I decided to take a shot at making my own. I choose an Art Deco style.

How did you make those? I'm guessing plug welded from the back and then plated?

They look great but what is the purpose? Do your wheels not lock? Ours lock so the piano just sits on the carpet.

What would it cost to get a chunk of brass and machine it into three caster cups?

The main purpose - for me with my grand on wall-to-wall carpeting - is to prevent the wheels from digging too deeply into the carpeting.

Those caster cups look great! Mine are just ordinary plastic ones provided by Yamaha. I just use them to keep the piano off the tiled floor to prevent scratches. Hopefully they also help to isolate the piano from the floor to prevent disturbing the neighbours downstairs.

And I think they really look sharp as well!

The brass will turn your carpet green if moisture gets under there though. Verdigris.

Chernobieff- I'm using a 1/4" thick cork disc under the cups. Do you think that would be enough to protect the carpet from verdigris? In addition I can also put a layer of varnish on the underside if you think that would help. Thanks for the heads up.
MarkL- I didn't do plug welds, tried plug brazing which really discolored the brass and was practically impossible to clean up inside corners. Ended up just using plumbing soder, which I ran on a rest piece which held up to hammer blows. Which is a lot more force than the compression weight of the piano on the pieces.
OldMH- That is what trandinhnamanh did, but he did it himself. Have no idea what it would cost to have someone do it for you. If you go that route let me know.

I have the clear plastic ones to protect the travertine tile, but yours are so much more beautiful. If you decide to put those into production, let us know.

There are actually brass caster cups out there if you google for them. Jansen even makes a set.

Fletcher and Newman make the large solid brass ones for about $70/each.
