I'm aware that this is a very subjectively charged discussion, but I'd like to give it a go. The latest to hit my attention is the Garritan CFX Abby Road....the "Lite" version is at a most affordable price. Without being able to try a VI in my environment, it's very difficult to evaluate whether I'll be satisfied, so I thought this would be a good place to get qualified opinions. I have been using the Ravenscroft 275, and it's OK, but I'm on the hunt for even better. The Garritan looks to have potential. Is there a massive difference having the additional mic positions with the full version, compared to Lite?

It's good if a little tame for my taste. However, it has a high reputation here. Have you seen this recent thread: http://forum.pianoworld.com/ubbthre...vst-for-classical-piano.html#Post2802917

This is a general VST thread but it has lots of information specifically on Garritan CFX and Garritan CFX lite.

I bought the lite version first and then bought the full version. The full version was definitely worth it IMHO. The additional mics were useful in giving a more full/complete sound, so to speak.
Note that all the Garritan CFX mic samples have a fair bit of Abbey Road room sound in it (even the close mics). So, you may want to make sure that you like that sound - because there is a lot of 'built in' reverb in this VST. I personally like it a lot.

Thanks Toddy...it is a bit of a rabbit hole, but generally, the CFX is a standout. When you say tame, do you mean it's not bright enough?

Thanks Osho....Do you run the max 120 whatever GB for the full version? Is it noticeable over the compact? I don't have a huge SSD boot drive. Just wondering how heavily it taxes the resources. I have an older i7 iMac, and it does fine with most things, but Keyscape can be a drain. Maybe I should start with the Lite. So hard to know without trying it in my DAW with all my other VI's. Kindof think I want to go for the full version, but can't have it bog down my workflow by demanding too much processor. A typical sequence has Omnisphere, a few live guitar tracks, Ravenscroft, Una Corda, and a bass track.

If you mean, have I installed all of the Full version - yes I have. The performance impact over compact wasn't something I noticed when I went from compact to full - but I have a dedicated desktop PC for VSTs which is powerful enough to run most things I have thrown at it.

In my case my laptop takes two minutes to load the complete version. It takes maybe 10-20 seconds to load the compact one. I find little discernible difference between the sound of the full and compact versions. But my ears are easy to please.

Its not exactly that it's not bright enough, but some other pianos are more dynamic and lively, if not as sweet and detailed as the Garritan CFX.

If you need to hear more examples of Garritan CFX Full to make a decision, you can check out the recordings on my YouTube channel (link in my signature). All of the classical pieces on my channel were played with Garritan CFX Full using the settings provided by Philip Johnston on Piano World with the exception of the Mozart Piano Concerto K. 537 "Coronation" where I used Ivory II Italian Grand.

Very nice V....have any tips for getting the best patches? I bought and installed it this afternoon. All the tweaking potential is overwhelming. Do you use a stock preset, or build one...or a combination of both? Any online resources discussing this subject? Thanks

Osho...I went for the full version and installed the compact. I am Not disappointed. Now I’ve gotta figure out what’s the best patch and how to tweak it. You have a favorite?

You are using the Ravenscroft 275 full version and are looking for something "better"...?

You think the Abbey Road CFX is going to sound "better" than the Ravenscroft 275...?

Yep..the Raven is quite nice. What I am discovering is the need for some variety in these digital virtual instruments. My three best choices are the Raven, now the Garritan, and I also use the Una Corda, although it is only for certain types of tunes.

Very nice videos.

Do you use the same settings for both the recorded videos and while you play? Or do you use a different setting, or the N1 sounds, while playing/practicing?

Thanks Rach...I'll try it out. I've been listening to Pandora, set to a "calm meditation music" station, and some of the piano sounds are glorious. Wonder how many use a VST.
