Nice compilation smile The CD with the two Chopin concertos by the 12-year-old Kissin is still one of my favourites.

A young Ivo Pogorelich.

As I suspected. They come fully formed out of the womb as great pianists.

It's a pity there's no video of Martha Argerich to go with the audio.

D'awwww!! Funny how he already had the "spider hands" as I call them, when he was playing. Now if only someone could subtitle the spoken parts, I'd love to know what they're all saying.

Also agree that it would be amazing to have a video of Martha Argerich at that age.

The 8 year old Zoltán Kocsis:

A 12 year old György Cziffra

(The footage of Cziffra does feature on YouTune erroneously in a film about Arrau! But this is Cziffra)

Benjamin Grosvenor's sound in the Glinka/Balakirev is magical.

I heard him live a fortnight ago in Stamford and the sound is the same!

So for those PW forum members who say it is all hard work, practice etc... and not natural talent in playing well, how do you account for the above examples? Also, given the above's young ages, that should mean that "anyone" putting in a few years of hard practice, should be able to play like "the above". laugh

Either you have it or you don't. All the practising in the world is not going to overide the lack of natural ability. Take the young Hofmann for example. Ironically Edison made a cylinder recording of him as a child but alas it was lost. Even the young Ervin Nyiregyházi was a marvel. These talents seem to be remembering things they already knew not learning from scratch like us mere mortals. Ultimately there is an effortlessness of techinique where we struggle to them like walking and not even a consideration. To transpose a WTC fugue on the spot as a child essentially child's play.

All the talent in the world's no use if it isn't paired with a lot of unglamorous hard work.

Without talent, most people can get to a decent level with hard work.

Exceptional talent combined with exceptionally hard work (and good tuition, and all that), leads to the kind of thing in the links above.

My 0.02$ smile

You have the classic example of Cziffra who was arrested and incarcerated in a hard labor camp for 3 years which injured both hands and he wore wrist braces for a time afterwards yet his technique returned and was the envy of established concert artists.
