Hi all,

I'd like to learn some songs on the piano that I can sing along to. For example, Elton John's 'Your Song'. I therefore need music, basic chords mostly, and also with lyrics. I don't need the single note melody line that most simple transcriptions of this song seem to include. I basically just want to play the accompaniment, both hands (deeper chords in the left, higher pitch chords in the right), and sing over the top.

Anyone know how I can get started on this? It seems impossible to find what im looking for.

Thanks

Hi

There are plenty of websites that will give you chords and lyrics for songs.

In terms of the music Elton John in particular is well catered for.

For just the chords this site covers virtually his entire catalog:

http://eltonchords.com/

For transcriptions (assuming you can read music) of his playing and style try EltonsCafe, a brilliant site that existed for many years (in the mid 2000s), then disappeared, but thankfully was resurrected a few years ago by some fans of Eltons Piano style. Its a wonderful site if you're a fan, or want to understand his unique Piano playing style.

https://eltonscafe.net/

You can find a very accurate transcription of a Your Song performance here.

https://eltonscafe.net/Songs/PDFfiles/YourSong74.pdf

Lyrics for songs generally easier to find than chords.
Go on Youtube and you can usually find a song with the lyrics displayed.

There are quite a few guitar/chord websites that give the lyrics and chords for a lot of artists.
Beware though, quite a few of these are submitted by normal human beings, and consequently contain errors..... sometimes really bad ones!

Cheers

Thanks for the replies and the Pm of the lead sheet chords.

The problem I have is illustrated right here in what Oasismfg supplied:

D G A F#m
It s a little bit funny this feeling inside

I dont know where on the piano to play this, in what inversion, what to do with other hand etc etc.

So i really need more than just a chord name, but not as much as a full transcription because its then too hard to play. I need enough to know where to put my fingers but which will allow me to learn to improvise around the base shapes once the vocals are down.

Hi

You have encountered the problem that I mentioned. The chords that Oasismfg supplied are on a lot of guitar chord websites. It's been transposed from the original key of Eb into the more guitar friendly key of D. And its been simplified, or the person who wrote the chords couldn't work out the proper ones. To play it in that key those chords should be:

D Gmaj7 A/E F#m

To play in an Elton John style, Iook at the website I suggested (Eltonscafe). You don't have to be able to read the transcriptions, but if you know where middle C is on the stave it'll give you a rough idea for the hand positions.

Generally the chords should be played around the middle C area by the RH, and the left-hand will play the root, 3rd or 5th lower down. Frequently as an octave, or single note then the note an octave higher. Again you can see many examples of exactly how Elton did this on the website. Obviously there will be variations, and lots of them!

Any chords or notes played more than an octave above middle C, or lower than A/G below middle C will start to sound odd. Higher up you can get away with notes/chords briefly (as decorative flourishes), but too low and they will sound muddy.

Well that's my opinion anyway!

Hope that helps.

Cheers
