True! Although I think it's partly just the sight of a big Caucasian guy playing in a park with a half Chinese girl and reciting ridiculous Chinese poems that amuses them! laugh

My wife asked me to put some money down for this item a few days ago. I don't know why she'd want it though, as her Mandarin is already better than mine, even though she's Russian and it's her third language. But it does look like a fun toy for Sinophiles.

Wikipedia said:

The companies began developing several new Essex models, which Steinway & Sons designed for affiliate company Boston Piano Co., Inc. The piano line reached the marketplace early in 2006. It was Steinway's first venture in China, and Pearl River's first OEM relationship with a Western piano maker.

Then cam from another contributor in the discussion).

It doesn't actually say anything about Boston pianos, only Essex models.

Well, the word “Boston” is in that paragraph. And Wikipedia, as acknowledged, is not always the best source of info. Sometimes the level of minitae can astound.

KurtZ, That is certainly a most cynical view of peoples ability to discern tone/touch quality. My experience shows that given the proper demonstration, "normal" people can discern tone differences. One must set up the musical context and be sure they are in "listening" mode to do this, but most people can hear the differences.

This is certainly correct. People frequently say they know nothing and that all pianos sound the same.

Playing a few sample bars on several pianos will almost always show preference. Woman usually can discern tonal differences easier.

I have found BOTH women and men can discern tonal differences.

Research has shown that women have greater high frequency sensitivity then men of the same age, which would suggest women are statistically more able to distinguish variations in tonal coloration then men of the same age.
