Thanks for the follow-up message, Frank!

It is always daunting converting from one platform to the next. Yours, even more so. So, it is always better to dig, dig, and dig some more to see if under the hood there is some code eating away resources. I have messed with the modules of code in a UBB environment before and it isn't pretty. My hat is off to the team of guys supporting you.

And if so, do you know what software they are using?

Frank: Thanks for asking, and even more, thanks totally for being in this discussion and trying to get ideas.

vBulletin is what a couple of the sites I referred to were using. But, let me say, for what it's worth, while I liked vBulletin, I've also very much liked the formats of this site, and have never wished for any different kind of software, although this slowness thing is a real issue and maybe raises some question about this.

I can see that this site's huge volume of users might make things more difficult. But, let me also say, while I don't know if those other sites had comparable numbers of members and users, they all had higher amounts of posting, which I would think is a big factor for what we're talking about.

I don't think the issue is with our server, as we have at a minimum 6 servers supporting Piano World, and our IT guy is a database expert who knows how to tweak and get the best out of them.

I know that connectivity is sometimes an issue of where one is accessing from, but I think the bigger issue here
is with the software running the UBB.

Ken (our guy in Canada) is going to get in touch with the UBB folks and see what can be done.
They all talk the same language, I talk piano (and minimal coding) which means I'm hoping they can figure things out between them.

Nobody likes to wait while a page loads, especially people like me with a very short attention span (I've lived with ADD all my life).

Hang in folks, we'll keep working on it.

Best,
Frank B.

phpBB is good software. I'm sure vBulletin is too--I've just never used it.

Funny, in the other thread I said:

Sounds like there's a screwy DB query...

In terms of symptoms, things were working fine for the most part. Then the system nearly ground to a halt. The IT guy was going to check something, and then it started working again, but with intermittent slowdowns. Those changes in behavior were significant, and tied to specific points in time. If this was just bad software, then the performance issues would grow steadily, snowballing over time. If UBB is the problem, then perhaps the changes are tied to upgrades or applied patches (or customizations). Software only behaves differently when it's changed. Diff the changes and look specifically for changes to DB queries. Huge increases in record sets are usually the result of selection criteria being screwed up. In particular, look for things like changes to relational operators (e.g. == changing to >= or <=). These can result in many more records being selected. Look for missing clauses in compound predicates (e.g. if "where x > y and x < z" becomes just "x > y", then the range is no longer bound at one end).

Also check to see if any upgrades changed or dropped indexes. 20k records is actually not that many, especially if the field list is small, but if a related index is hosed or missing, and the DB has to dynamically index at runtime, then it's gonna choke.

This is not a conclusion. It is what Frank B.'s IT guy is telling him is the reason.

Argumentative. It could be a conclusion--drawn by the IT guy. Counsel has absolutely no idea where IT guy got his "information". Request the post be struck from the record.

Not only slow for me now (especially for posting), but the forum index for the "our most popular forums" has now completely disappeared? The only way to change subforums is if you have a direct link or search for a specific thread within the forum you want to visit.

Well, that makes no sense. Why would you talk in the past tense in a post you're submitting in the present?
How about "I don't expect this to actually get posted until, say, three years have elapsed."?
Or "I wonder how long this post will take to appear...three years, maybe?"
It's important for input to make sense, for credibility purposes. How can we expect Frank to expedite, if he thinks we're being facetious?
