Kawai ES8 as a midi controller? #2801375

Yes I realise all the other keyboards that are more suited for this purpose. I know the MP7 has all the control function. But I need to buy a piano for doing wedding type gigs, and it would be a SLAM dunk on an ES8 except I don't really want to have another slab for studio and creative work. I am losing my mind (almost) trying to search for any information on the midi capabilities, even people talking about this etc.. so far nothing. Im even trying to read through the manual online! Is anyone using this keyboard with virtual instruments, and does it allow for any zoning? Also, if there aren't any controller functions (it's hard to believe how deliberate companies are about making you buy two keyboards) are there any aftermarket gizmos that I can sit with the keyboard, to make it into a master keyboard with decent functionality? Thanks...

The ES8 Manual is available online.

It does some MIDI stuff. It has MIDI in and out, but not thru. It can also do USB-MIDI. I don't know if it'll do what you need, but if you know what you need, you can check it out.

There's a MIDI section on page 123, and there's some tables in the appendix.

I use my ES8 for entry into notation programs, also to record MIDI music and play it back. I don't use it to control other MIDI instruments or VSTs.

About zoning, I suppose the ES8 doesn’t support it. There is only one channel we can set according to the documentation.

However, with a DAW you should be able to create multiple tracks with a different key range and define the different zones you want.
