The article I read quoted him as saying he had had lessons for several years as a child but was self-taught since then. Obviously he has a few pieces in his repertoire!

Yes......take with a big pinch of salt anyone who says he/she was entirely self-taught yet is able to play advanced classical rep with fluent technique (or even with not-quite-so-fluent technique but without major weaknesses).

Unfortunately, they only serve to mislead people who believe they can get to that kind of standard without proper instruction from a good teacher. There was a Tchaikovsky Competition finalist who claimed something similar - that he was self-taught, and only started lessons as an adult, and that only for a few years prior to the competition. No - he'd had lessons at a conservatoire as a kid for several years before turning to something else.

And a PW member (who takes part in amateur piano competitions) gave me the same impression recently, then admitted he was performing Clementi sonatinas at age nine in competitions, and already had lessons for a few years by then.......

One of the most talented young posters at PW delivered sandwiches while in college. I don't think it's so uncommon for high school or college students who may have various high-level skills to have jobs like these to earn some extra money.

Some people who goes to a Classical concert would fall asleep. And others would listen to a performance intensely and pick out all the nuances. And there are people who are happy to fiddle around with their expensive HiFi sound system at home with their extensive collection of video & audio discs and after listening to their favorite recordings 1000 times all they can really do is turn the sound system on and press the play button. In the living room a piano just sits as another piece of furniture.

Finally some people including myself belief in past lives. He may have lived in the 18th or the 19th century and got hold of the compositions of Beethoven and learned to play them. Not everybody remember their previous lives but there may be certain things that come up such as an ability to learn and understand a specific foreign language or get into playing certain types of music.

Dudal is a mostly self-taught pianist and eventually got private lessons.

“My mom, when I was real young, she got me Beethoven CDs, and I used to sit there and listen to them all day," he said. "The music just spoke to me. And I would have loved to be able to play that on the piano and I took the time to, with no teacher, learn it myself."

That's just about the most vague and misleading puff that gets into the media.

'Mostly self-taught" can mean ten years of lessons from age six to sixteen, then learning whatever he fancies by himself until recently (when he decided to get private lessons). And after all those years of lessons, he should be able to learn the Moonlight by himself - it contains a lot of straightforward technical stuff (like broken chords) that all classically-taught students have to learn (see the thread on scales).

I've yet to see people acknowledge - and name - their teachers when they become well-known on YT......

There is no way he is self taught, sorry. His technique isn't good, but a teacher has had a hand over some time there.

I think he isn't 100% self taught.
He can learn this work without a teacher but surely he studied a similar repertoire with a teacher!

More realistic is Brendan Hawksley who put out this 1 year progress video of his self teaching, but even he had formal musical background before he started - a few years of flute so he could already read the treble clef:

Someone liked what Brandon did though as two major UK universities offered him admission as a piano performance major:
