Hello!
I am a piano teacher and looking for a good piano to teach on. I’ve come across a BS2N Kawai. Serial number is 2165154. I believe it’s a 1993. Does anyone know if this is a good Kawai or not? They are asking $3500 for it in excellent condition. Thanks for any info!

The BS2N was a very nicely designed model in my opinion. It is a middle iteration of a long line of 49" Kawai models. I describe it and others as made for "Institutional Use" and in may be described as Kawai's answer to Yamaha's model U1. I tend to prefer it musically over the U1, but I would describe that as an equivalent. The Kawai will tend to be priced a little less than it's Yamaha equivalent due mostly to the difference in brand recognition.

We've sold many of them. The more recent versions were the K-50 and K-5. It doesn't quite line up with any of the current models I know of.

Unwinding Kawai's upright model names is challenging as they changed often, even if the internal change was very minor. Some are "Super Editions" or "Student Editions" or "Anniversary Editions" or whatever think the marketing dept felt safe to put on it at the time. Fluff aside, they are one of Kawai's proven designs.

Of course, it is the specifics of the mechanical condition that matter. At its age, it could be excellent or disappointing. It's never a bad idea to verify the condition or make your purchase contingent on passing and inspection.

Thank you so much! I went and looked at it. The car drive was three hours away. For some reason, I left feeling disappointed and unsure. It felt “cheap” somehow. I have been playing for 40 years, but I’m definitely not a professional when it come to quality pianos! I’m going to have a technician go look at it for me! There was another BS2N in a piano store and they were asking $5500. But his pianos seemed overpriced after I did some googling.

Kawai BS2M I have never heard of it .Is this a regular Kawai meant for North America ?
I thought the K300 and the K500 were the ones similar to the Yamaha U1 and U3 ..
What did you find that was cheap about the piano you looked at ?

Well, I can’t quite explain. The pedals were clunky when I used them and keys felt very “loose”. The BS2N, I found out, was made in Japan, and sold in Japan. Then somehow eventually ended up here in Canada, likely with a family that came over from Japan. I called a few Kawai places and no one had even heard of the BS2N which made me nervous! I also played a couple U3 Yamaha’s at a used store and they were hands down way nicer to play. In the meantime, this BS21 has sold and I’m okay with that. Something wasn’t sitting quite right with me!
