Hello guys,

I am a hobbyist piano player. I have heard of the various kinds of pianos like acoustic pianos, digital pianos, concert pianos and few more kind. But i don't know exactly the difference between these pianos. Are they are differ with the various features like sound quality and other measures of performance or it is just a matter of difference in price. Acoustic pianos can also be used for normal use right? Then what is the difference between acoustic and digital pianos. I know little information about concert pianos they are easy to handle in concert performances. My question is, Is there any digital pianos which come with the same features as like concert pianos?

I am expecting the replies from you guys and hope you people can help me to come out of these confusions.

What sort of piano do you currently have, that you play as a hobbyist?

Both the quality, touch and sound are different.

Sound differs: the amplitude (volume), and the quality of the sound. Quality means the type and amount of harmonics. Also how well the different registers connect and how the sound changes between lower and higher registers.

The touch differs in the heaviness, the sensitivity (how soft can you play) and how it reacts to going louder.

Pedal behaviour also changes, some have heavy pedal, some light, some require more pedaling while others react immediately to small changes; some pedals act evenly on all notes while on others some notes pedal before other notes.

There are much more variations, but this gives some ideas

The ordinary traditional piano is acoustic, whether upright or grand. Concert grands are the biggest grands.

Digitals are electronic.

After you read pianobuyer.com, go to stores. Try a number of different acoustic pianos, then go to Guitar Center or Sam Ash and try a bunch of digitals.

This is and extremely high level overview, but...

Digital pianos are divided into various categories. There are stage pianos & digital workstations which are used in more professional settings for live performances and recording sessions usually when being used in a band. Most of these sit on metal crossbar stand. Then there are units intended for the classroom or home that come built into cabinets to look like a traditional upright piano or grand piano. The quality of the piano sounds and the keyboard action (playing mechanism) are all over the board. On the higher end, the piano sample sounds are excellent and the keyboard actions are designed to mirror the actions of top tier grand pianos. However, at this point, digital pianos would never be considered on the level of concert grand acoustic pianos. It is rare that a digital pianos are used as a solo instrument or with an orchestra in a live performance.

Acoustic pianos are divided into upright pianos and grand pianos. Upright pianos are classified into 4 size ranges -- shortest to tallest -- spinets, consoles, studios, and uprights (meaning upright grands b/c or the size of the soundboard). Spinets and consoles often have more decorative cabinets and are intended for home or light use. Studio and upright grands are used in schools, music teaching studios, and rehearsal facilities where more heavy usage is required. Many professional musicians have studios and upright grands in their homes if they cannot afford a grand piano or space is limited.

Grand (or wing grand) pianos are also divided into categories by size ranges -- baby grand, grand, semi-concert grand, and concert grand. In general, baby grand are shorter than 5.5 feet (or so). Grands range from 5.5 feet to 7 feet. Semi-concert grands are in the 7 feet range, and concert grands are in the 9 feet range.

Acoustic pianos (upright or grand) are then classified into tiers based upon their intended use (home, amateur, profession, concert), quality, and name recognition among pianists.

IMO in this forum an instrument with at least 88 keys (current standard) and produce a piano sound is treated as a piano. Acoustic or digital.

Instruments for example having 61 keys might be called a keyboard but not a piano

As the name implies, in an acoustic piano the sound is produced acoustically, by a felt hammer striking steel (or copper wounded stell) string(s) connected to a wooden board (soundboard) .

In a digital piano sound is produced electronically, amplified and released through speakers.

Concert piano is a large and powerful acoustic piano so that it can be used in a concert hall.

IMO currently there aren't any digital pianos that can be compared with a concert grand.

Also digital pianos are expected to mimic the action and pedals of an acoustic piano .

I have same advice I always gave my customers:
"Try as many pianos as possible" - including stores.
It would be nice if you present yourself as real buyer - or NOT.
Once you're honest about your visit, a gracious owner or salesman will give you the time.[hopefully..]
That's the best way of learning - reading books is IMHO second. Similar to dating. grin
Never forget: we all come up with different conclusions.

Just for the sake of completeness, since a powerful large acoustic piano is a “witch” to take on the road and move and would have to be tuned, voiced and regulated for each show, there are professional digital keyboards, that can be used with synths and speaker systems. These professional systems can be rather expensive but no where near as expensive as a decent acoustic grand.
I absolutely prefer an acoustic grand, but could easily amuse myself for days with a Yamaha Motif synth. My Casio 88 key keyboard weighs only 26 lbs and can be carried in my little SUV. If I played in a band, guess which one would get to go to the show.
Acoustic brand artists have a choice of concert grands at each venue they play but sadly I sure ain’t in that league 😃.

In my opinion, the words I have highlighted below are key:

"Expected" doesn't mean that they do; "mimic" suggests only a simulation, not the real deal.

That has been my experience as well.

Regards,

You could say that upright acoustics are expected to mimic the action and sounds of a grand acoustic piano. It is the end result in terms of the music which matters most.
