Hi!

I wanted to buy Yamaha CFX by VSL by there is a lot of complication. I thought that after purchase I will download library and just start playing (like it was with Grandeur, Garritan CFX and Embertone Walker 2155). But when it comes to buying product from VSL I need additional USB stick and some additional protection software which is very problematic and they also recommend some additional protection plan for 70$. With this additional protection it seems that if your usb get damaged, you won't be able to recover your license and if you lost your usb you will have to buy exactly the same product all over again. Digital product is impossible to lost but they make it possible. Bravo. It is way more complicated that it should be and I think that even though I will be satisfied with the instrument I will still regret purchase because of this licensing horror. In the future I want to buy new pc and I can predict that it will be real pain migrating this library onto a new computer.

That;s why I'm looking for alternatives. What can I buy best for 300USD? Are there any libraries that are well sampled and are at least 100gb in size?

I own Garritan CFX but I'm unable to make it sound right and Grandeur is much easier to handle. : )

I don't think there is an alternative.

BTW, regarding migrating to a new computer, nothing could be easier.

I don't care about the whole USB dongle thingie, so I don't have anything relevant to say on that.

Have a look at the Bechstein Digital VST. It's samples a C. Bechstein concert grand piano, costs $262 USD, is about 80 GB in size and works through Kontakt player just like the Grandeur. Embertone's Walker 1955 Concert D is another very good one.

Also have a look at Production voices Production Grand 2 and Concert Grand

The Garritan CFX is the best and closest alternative IMO. If you aren't able to make it sound right, then spend some more time on it - try different mic configs, go through the presets, play with the EQ and the mic volumes, and so on.

Next in line would be Ivory American Concert D, but the sound is not as good as the VSL pianos, and it requires an iLok account. You can use it without a dongle, but it's a similar copy protection system with the same kind of "licensing slot" system.

The Grandeur is OK, also have a look at the Galaxy Vintage D. It's only a few GB in size, though, and the sound won't come close to the VSL entries.

The Bechstein has great playability but the sound is nothing that would satisfy you if you are in expectation of a similar sound quality as heard in VSL's pianos. It doesn't have half pedal either, and it needs a powerful CPU. But the playability is really good.

I would personally recommend against the Productionsvoices pianos as well as against the Embertone Walker. Both have supbar playability when compared to the previously named VSTs (missing or broken half pedal, for example, as well as notes sticking out and being out of tune, or note ranges being weaker then the rest of the keyboard), and they have other issues that are not fixed by the developers despite their promises of releasing patches to go back as far far as half a year.

If you're only about playing and don't need great sound quality then also check out Pianoteq. With the Stage version you can get a superbly playable VST at a low price.

Check this out: http://www.supremepiano.com/index.html?piano1.html

It's a Yamaha C7.

The developer is giving it away for free to encourage users to buy their full products. I'm not saying it's an alternative to anything but i will say that you will be pleasantly surprised by the sound. Just make sure you use "Exp 2" in the velocity curve settings and add a reverb of your choice.

I tried that download ... and I got a 414 GB .rar file. WinRar says that it's corrupt and cannot be extracted. frown

It's a 414 MB file and the file you're downloading should be called Piano1X.rar

Try refreshing the page and download again.

Disappointingly, exactly the same thing happens with me. Not only does WinRar warn you that the file is corrupted, it also flatly refuses to do anything with it if you try to decompress it. I've tried twice, restarting the process from your link to open all the windows freshly, but the same thing happens.

Strange, i just re-downloaded again and unpacked it just to see if the hosting file on their site was changed or something and everything unpacked just fine. Maybe try something else other than Winrar?

I just re-downloaded, and this time I tried the command-line UnRar program instead of WinRar. Still no good.

tdwctdwc: What country are you located in? Perhaps you connect to a different feeder host?

I doubt it has anything to do with that. I had problems with versions of winrar in the past and it was solved when i used something else like 7-zip.

An unorthodox solution, but try to ignore the errors when extracting and see if you get the same files as the picture below. If you do, you're all set.

Right. This time, using NCH zip decompresser, the files extracted perfectly well and without warning notices. The piano is a beautiful rich ringing sample set but it has the oddest, most abrupt release phase I've ever heard - as if the samples has been cut up like tape splices. Reverb goes some way to cover this up, but it's still rather strange. Interesting, but not, on first impression, a stock favourite for me, I'm afraid.

If the note is allowed to ring through its decay phase, it sounds great, but as soon as you play - quavers and crotchets and staccato - it doesn't sound like a piano, but like an electronic instrument with sustain, which pianos in real life just do not have.

Thanks for the link, tdwctdwc.

I love this piano.

My only reservation about it is the release, but you can kinda partially make it better by turning the release and timing knobs clockwise. I turn the release to the max and the timing around 2 o clock.

And yes, adding reverb will help you cheat a bit :P

I've just seen the damping section - you can improve it quite a lot by increasing the time by quite a few milliseconds - it still sounds weird, though. Will have to work on this a bit. It has a lovely sound.

Yes it does help. But what i like the most about this piano is how it sounds. I listened to it everywhere, phone, car system, headphones and it sounds beautiful, pensive and clear.

Another tip: Don't use the built-in reverb they provide you, it makes it very noisy and muddy and adds a lot of unwanted low-end artifacts to the sound.
