Hello Everyone,

I found your forum while searching for answers for a mystery four digit number on a newly acquired Steinert Model C grand piano. I am a Sr. Pastor in Hampton, ON and have three beautiful daughters that play several instruments but their primary is piano. We currently have a 1905 Heintzman Scale J but with three playing and a new home we have the space for a baby grand. While searching the classified I came across a piano I have never heard of, after taking my churches piano re-builder to look at it he said for $400 it is a great candidate for our home. It needs some work on the hammers, some shanks, and voicing but the overall condition of the whole piano was in fair to Good condition. So now for the question, all we see for a serial number is four digit number in many locations.
I want to thank Seeker for all his help but he ran into a dead end in finding out the age of this piano.]
Attached is the link to the piano's pictures.

Here is the link to the piano after the first tuning.

If you all could shed some light on this mystery it would be great. None the less if you can't we will still enjoy this $400.00 piano smile

I can't help you with the age, but it sounds like you did alright. How much money did you have to put into it?

So far $685.00 to card the hammers, fix 9 shanks, regulate, voice and tune. So total $1085.00 CDN which is roughly $800 usd.

Those are part numbers not a serial number. If i'm not mistaken Steinert was the Mfg that like to copy Steinway designs.

Hello Chris,
That is what others have said that they were part numbers. Please pardon my ignorance but if they were part numbers why are they all the same in 7 places?
All three legs have 2855
The cheek is 2855
front of Keys 2855
Under piano by pedals 2855
Under Keyboard cover 2855
This is what confuses me why would all these places that should have serial numbers have the same part number? Steinert in Boston told me to look in all these places for serial numbers and this is all I found. That is why I am reaching out for help.

That's what a part number is for, to keep all the parts together. Sometimes when a plate is refinished the serial number gets lost. The atlas has them in business between 1916-1932 with serial numbers starting at 121xxx to 165xxx. So now you have a rough idea of the age.
Of better value would be to read Morris' books. Steinert had the largest musical instrument collection in the world at the time.

Thank you that makes sense. I guess when I thought of part numbers I think of each part having the different numbers for each part to make it easy if you had to order that specific part.

That's right -- part numbers are used in a parts catalog on a vast number of different manufactured products for ordering replacement parts. Any auto parts store will have a big stack of catalogs on the counter.

The number 2855 used in so many places on your piano was a factory working number, assigned as Chris said, to keep the right parts together because they're carefully fitted to each other. I find working numbers in Arriflex cameras, too. They're only used on high quality precision products.

Serial numbers are only assigned when the unit is complete and passes all inspections, which often doesn't happen in the same order in which they were started, so that's why they use temporary working numbers.
