I just got my monthly delivery of sheet music - replenishing my lost collection slowly but steadily here!

Since I still have problems with my hands, I try to stay away from the likes of Brahms, Schumann and Chopin for the time being, so I got Mozart sonatas. Now I'm looking for inspiration. Anyone of you have a favourite there, or two?

My favorite has always been K330.

I have found K333 very satisfying. I love that the final movement is a sort of concerto movement, with a proper cadenza.

I have also very much enjoyed playing the C Minor K457. This pairs nicely with the Fantasia K475, which is wonderful.

As Sturm und Drang had always been part of my genetic make-up , I naturally gravitate towards those kind of works - especially in a composer like Wolfie, who normally prefers to bury (but never completely) his moments of pathos deep beneath surface elegance, high spirits, or even comedy.

Which is why I'm drawn to K310 and K457/K475 (and of course K466 & K491 concertos, the G minor symphonies, Don Giovanni, Requiem, K304 violin sonata....). K310 was the first Mozart sonata I learnt by myself in my teens, and is particularly 'unhinged' (especially so for a Classical piece) in its ferocity and tempestuousness - and the barely suppressed outburst in the slow movement (reminiscent of K466's slow movement), which seems initially to be an oasis of calm (like the eye of the hurricane), which is why it's my favourite of all.

Yes, I will happily vote for K310 too. But it's a bit harder, I think.

@bennevis and David-G: I had a look and remembered I actually used to play the 310 too. Maybe I'll start off with that one, then (and lament how much harder it is for me now, ha!).

K.310 here too. 457 too, because Mozart in a minor key.

Not a sonata, but the Mozart I keep coming back to is the A minor Rondo K511. A wonderful piece. And I also dearly love the "Andante fur eine Walze in eine kleine Orgel" K616. This is a very late work and to me is the essence of what Mozart is about. Actually for mechanical organ, but seems better to me on the piano. Needs to be played with great sensitivity.

Learned to play (part or whole of):

K283 (heard Liu Shikun's recording of this and liked it)

K281 (herad Horowitz's recording and liked it)

K397 (my teacher's assignment, also heard a nice rendition of the 3rd movement in one of Inspector Morse's episode in the 80's and liked it )

Correction, it was actually the Andante from K 545 that I heard in the Inspector Morse episode ("The Last Bus to Woodstock")

The Piano Sonata in F major, K. 332 has been a favorite of mine. The recording by Mitsuko Uchida is worth a listen.

You should also consider exploring some of the Haydn sonatas if you haven't already.

+1 for Mozart in minor!


The Rondo is beautiful. While we're on the subject of non-sonatas: I'm currently in love with the Adagio in b-minor K540, which he apparently wrote just after his father's death. It didn't really speak to me until I got the music and started practising it. Such delicate beauty.


Horowitz and Mozart in particular, is a combination I'll never get tired of. Thanks for these!


I'm just trying to buy sheet music as I can afford it (lost all mine in a move three years ago), but Haydn will definitely follow at some point!

Some of the Oxfam charity shops are very well run second-hand bookshops. In these I have found some nice Henle editions of Schubert, and Wiener Urtext editions of Haydn, that were quite inexpensive. I don't know if Oxfam operate in Ireland.

Probably in Dublin, but I live in the "shticks" in the far West, so not so much. Galway and Limerick both have options for second-hand/antiquarian music, but not a great selection. I'm keeping an eye out, though! The thing is, while I can't afford to buy back everything I lost, it's not necessary either. I can only play so much at a time, after all.

.Favorite ones are k333 in B flat , the A minor .This is difficult to
bring off well .I have played the Fantasia in C minor .This is the
one written for the C minor sonata .
There is one in D major one with a rather romantic andante ,the ending is is almost like Love Story .I cannot think of the K number .
The last movement a wonderful Rondo .

I'm fond of K. 284 in D Major, which is not heard so much. The last mvt. is a great set of variations. The 1st mvt. is very "opera overture"-like, I love to play that mvt. especially.

K. 311, also in D Major, has a really fine rondo, @Lady Bird which might be the one you are thinking of.

Thank you so much for all the suggestions, guys. I’m currently having fun listening to all of these on Idagio and will start on one of the easier ones as soon as I’m allowed to practice for more than 10 minutes a day once again. Really looking forward to exclaiming: “Too many notes!” soon

Yes I think that's the one .Look at the Coda of the slow movement .You almost have to use touches of pedal to join the notes in the LH accompaniment .
Years ago I had a teacher who said these lyrical slow movements
were like Mozart "opera arias" for the piano . I suppose there are always some exceptions however.

Mozart piano pieces I can play (sort of), are:
Sonata K333 (B Flat Major)
Sonata K331 (A Major), first and third movement
Sonata K310 (A Minor), first movement (not well).

My favourite:
Rondo K485 (D Major). Not too difficult to play technically, but fun and rewarding.

Pieces I used to play but which didn't really stick with me are:
Sonata K332 (F Major)
Fantasy K397 (D Minor)
Variations over "Ah vous dirai je Maman"
