Wishing each of you, my PianoWorld friends, a Very Happy New Year in 2019! May it be filled with music, hope, peace, love, joy, and good health!

I would like to apologize for my absence over the past 6 weeks or so, as my dear mother Dorothea Solomonides - who was as sharp as a tack as she approached her 91st birthday - passed away just before Christmas, after declining health due to pulmonary failure. My family and I will miss her kind and sacrificial spirit and are encouraged in our own faith by her example. The other challenge for my family was trying to absorb this great loss, while staying upbeat for our excited twin 6 year old daughters this Christmas... they were a great source of joy during this trying time. So again, many apologies for my disappearance from PianoWorld.

My mom was a woman of great faith and creativity, and a loving and dedicated mother of quiet strength. Born in Constantinople (Istanbul, Turkey) in 1928, she came to the U.S. in 1957 and became a proud U.S. citizen in 1963. She spoke four languages (English, Greek, Turkish and Armenian) and was a very talented seamstress and fashion designer in her day - creating and handcrafting many beautiful outfits and jackets for famous clients such as: long-time WTIC-AM radio personality Jean Colbert, internationally renowned cellist Raya Garbousova, and noted classical pianists: Anne Koscielny and husband Raymond Hanson.

Although I am still melancholy about the loss of my dear mother, I also am reminded how absolutely ready she was to see her Jesus, and was inspired to record Franz Liszt's lovely "Au lac de Wallenstadt" ("At Lake Wallenstadt"), in a single take, from his 'Annees de Pelerinage - Suisse' ('Years of Pilgrimage - Swiss'), last weekend in her memory. Liszt's inspiration for the piece was the quotation:
"…Thy contrasted Lake, with the wild world I dwell in, is a thing which warns me, with its stillness, to forsake earth’s troubled waters for a purer spring." (Byron).

I thought I might share it in her honor as we close out 2018, and look forward to the coming New Year.

Franz Liszt - "Au lac de Wallenstadt", pb Jason Solomonides

The recording was done using my M&H BB with WNG action as a digital keyboard controller via PianoDisc ProRecord MIDI; The MP3 Audio was created by a 50:50 mixture in Audacity of PianoTeq 6.3 - using the new Ant. Petrof 275 Concert Grand VST and Garritan's Yamaha CFX Full Sampled VST - using 1981 Goldberg Preset.

Thanks for posting. She sounded like a great lady.

It's always hard to say goodbye to a parent...I'm facing that now. I'm glad she's finally gotten her reward that she so looked forward to.

I'm sorry for your loss. How wonderful that she managed to live to a ripe old age. That's what you'll remember in time.

Jason, my friend with whom I've always enjoyed communicating with, please accept my sincere and heartfelt condolences tomyou and your family. I know exactly how you must feel as I too, lost a parent last Christmas and struggled to maintain the joy for my 2 children while feeling an empty loss of a parent. My prayers and thoughts are with you and thank you again for your contributions here and willingness to always share with others. frown

Dear Jason,

Although we have never met in person, I feel like we are friends. It is weird how that happens online, through mutual friends, social media, and phone calls.

Now I feel like I have had a glimpse of who has made you who you are. Thank you for posting this recording. It is a fitting tribute to a strong and wonderful woman and I am currently sitting bedside next to my mother in a hospital, so this is hitting me deeply in a tender moment as well.

I speak a smattering of conversational Greek and Armenian, but I cannot write either worth a darn, so I will leave you with this in English. No matter what our age, our mother is our mother, our family is our family, and our friends continue to be our support. Please feel free to reach out to me anytime. I empathize with your feelings right now.

God bless and give my best to Dan. I missed him over the holidays.

Yours,

Rich Galassini

Jason, A touching tribute to your Mom, beautifully played. My condolences on your loss. I lost my Mom a few years ago, at 90, and she too was ready to meet her Savior; what a great comfort knowing they're in a better place.

Jason - Your playing of the Liszt is exquisite. Such a lovely tribute to your dear mother - who apparently enjoyed a long and productive life. My sincere condolences to you and your family.

I missed this post the other day. I'm sorry to hear about your mother, Jason. I lost my mom in 1988, so I can definitely empathize. I also lost a brother in 2012, my dad in 2013, and--as many of you know--I lost my wife a little over a year ago. Some of you also know that after my dad passed, and before Mrs. Retsacnal's 22 month cancer battle began, that I was also diagnosed with cancer. I had a tumor removed from my leg, radiation therapy, and a second tumor removed from my neck a year later.

But it hasn't been all doom and gloom. The biggest source of joy in my life has been helping Mrs. Retsacnal raise two incredible young ladies. She managed to see them both graduate high school. One is nearly done with college now, and the other a sophomore.

On a bright note, I found out today that I won't be orphaning them any time soon. Before Christmas I had an MRI and CT scans. Today I met my oncologist for a checkup. After five pretty miserable years, I'm cancer free. It's bittersweet after losing my wife, but I'm officially a survivor.

To borrow Lady Bird's euphemism, I have returned to the land of the living. smile

And still I dream she'll come to me
That we will live the years together
But there are dreams that cannot be
And there are storms we cannot weather
